Terriers Sweep Weekly Tennis Awards - AmericaEast.com

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  Boston University’s Emilio Teran (Miami, Fla./Coral Gables) and Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis (Haltern am See, Germany/Joseph Koenig Gymnasium) went a combined 5-1 in singles action last week as the Terriers sweep the Player of the Week awards.

Teran went 3-1 in singles over the past week. The rookie dropped just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Fairleigh Dickinson and just three games in his 6-2, 6-1 triumph at No. 4 over Western Illinois. Teran’s final victory of the week came in three sets against Gonzaga.

Athanasiadis collects her second player of the week honor this season after pulling out a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles against Rutgers and then defeating No. 74 College of Charleston’s top singles player, 6-4, 6-4 to cap off an undefeated week in singles play. The sophomore also picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles against Davidson.

Albany dropped its lone match of the week against Cleveland State, 5-2, in Boca Raton, Fla. The Great Danes have now lost their last two matches overall. Rocio Lopez Alberca (Madrid, Spain/Georgia Tech) has been a bright spot for Albany, winning her last three matches at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Livia Gherman (Zalau Salaj, Romania/Colegiul National Silvania/Washington State). Lopez needed three sets against the Vikings to improve to 6-6 this season at No. 1 singles. Gherman also went 2-0 against Cleveland State, winning her No. 2 singles match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. The Great Danes play Atlantic-10 foe St. Bonaventure at home on Friday then travel to Marist on Sunday.

The Binghamton men did not compete last week but will return to action this weekend with matches against Army, Yale and St. Bonaventure. The Bearcat women head to Syracuse this weekend to take on the Orange and Boston University.

The Boston University women spent spring break in Charleston, S.C, and fell to both Rutgers (5-2) and No. 74 College of Charleston (4-3) before earning a 4-0 win against Davidson. Sophomores Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis and Amelia Martinez (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) led the Terriers with two singles victories. Last Tuesday, Athanasiadis and junior Jessi Linero (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) entered the national doubles rankings at No. 67, marking the second straight year that Boston U. has a ranked doubles pair. The Terriers travel to Syracuse for a match with Binghamton and the Orange March 24-25. The men spent spring break in California and went 1-3 over the week, picking up a 7-0 victory against Western Illinois while dropping matches to Loyola Marymount (7-0), Fairleigh Dickinson (5-2) and Gonzaga (6-1). Freshman Emilio Teran led the Terriers with three singles victories. Boston U. will next visit Quinnipiac on Thursday before heading to Fairfield, Conn., to take on Sacred Heart.

Hartford has one final week off before returning to action the week of Mar. 28.

The UMBC men snapped a four-match slide with a 7-0 blanking of Howard over the weekend. Freshman Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) shifted to No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles. Gray won 6-1, 6-0 in singles action and teamed with Joe Adewumi to win 8-1 in doubles play. The women’s squad did not compete this week. Both teams head for Texas, where they will have three matches in four days. UMBC will face UT-San Antonio, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas-Pan America. The men faced TAMU-CC two seasons ago and came away with a 4-3 win, while the women picked up victories over TAMU-CC (4-2) and San Antonio (5-2). Head coach Rob Hubbard is a UT-Pan American graduate and coached his alma mater for three seasons prior to coaching the Retrievers.

Stony Brook’s tennis squads fell to national ranked Brown teams over the weekend with both the men and women dropping 6-1 decisions. For the men, Nikita Fomin (Moscow, Russia) earned Stony Brook’s lone point, winning in three sets at No. 1 singles. Fomin is ranked No. 139 in the latest ITA rankings. He is now 7-1 at No. 1 singles in dual matches this season. Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y.) won in straight sets at No. 3 singles to pick up the Seawolves’ point on the women’s side. Both teams are off this week before returning to action next week as the women host Fairfield and the men travel to take on St. John’s.
