In honor of recognizing women in sports, Binghamton University
hosted its Seventh Annual Bearcats Celebrating Women’s Athletics Luncheon and
Auction earlier this week. As a way of continuing to support the women’s athletic
community at Binghamton University, all ticket proceeds from the event go
towards building scholarship funds for female student-athletes.
Over the years, this event has grown and continues to get
bigger and better every year. Some of the country’s most renowned professional
female athletes have attended this event as keynote speakers, sharing their own
experiences and insight.
This year’s keynote speaker was Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Amanda Beard
who has competed at the past four Olympic Games. Beard shared some of her
favorite memories as well as the several obstacles she has had to overcome. Her
strongest piece of advice to young athletes is to have fun and enjoy your
sport. Beard is preparing for her fifth Olympic trials this summer.
Binghamton softball student-athlete Briana Andrews also
shared her experiences at the University and how appreciative she has been for
the opportunity to earn two degrees and participate in a sport. Andrews has been
humbled by the chance to receive a scholarship and hopes this event continues
to give others the same fortune.
In its 40th year, Title IX continues to impact
the lives of female student-athletes across the country. America East
Commissioner Amy Huchthausen acknowledged that Title IX has enabled women to
not only play a sport they love, but more importantly receive a higher
education while doing so.

interviews with Amanda Beard, Briana Andrews, and Binghamton University
Athletic Club Board President Patty Bloomer.
