UMBC Once Again Tabbed Top Up-and Coming University - AmericaEast.com

Once again, UMBC has been chosen as the top up-and-coming university and seven other America East institutions were also ranked among the top-160 national universities according to the U.S. News and World Report Best College annual rankings and lists released this week.

All nine conference institutions were ranked in at least one category.

Boston University ranked 53rd in the “top national universities” category, the highest among the eight America East schools which cracked the list.  University of Vermont (82), Binghamton University (90), University of New Hampshire (101) and Stony Brook University (111) all received high rankings in that category.  The University at Albany (138), University of Maine (152) and UMBC (157) were also ranked as top national universities.

In addition, Vermont grabbed the No. 36 ranking in the subdivision of “best public universities” Binghamton (39), UNH (46) and Stony Brook (54) also earned spots among the top-60.

University of Hartford checked in at No. 82 in the North regional rankings and UMBC also earned the No. 4 place for “best undergraduate teaching.”

Binghamton, Boston U. and UMBC all ranked in the top-100 of Campus Ethnic Diversity, as well.

To rank colleges and universities, U.S. News and World Report first assigns schools to a group of their peers, based on the basic categories developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in 2006. Those in the national universities group are the “262 American universities that offer a wide range of undergraduate majors as well as master’s and doctoral degrees; many strongly emphasize research.”

In each category, data on up to 15 indicators of academic quality are gathered from each school and tabulated. Schools are ranked within categories by their total weighted score.
