The Binghamton University men's tennis team and the Boston University
women's tennis team fell to their PAC-10 foes in the opening round of the NCAA
Tennis Championships this weekend. The Bearcats and Terriers, crowned the men's
and women's America East champions on May 1, both dropped 4-0 decisions to
ranked teams in their opening matches.
Binghamton lost, 4-0, to No. 11 UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif. Boston U.
dropped its match against California, the No. 9 team in the nation, 4-0, in
Berkeley, Calif.
On Friday, the Bearcats took on a UCLA squad that featured two ranked
doubles teams and four ranked singles players. The Bearcats started strong in
doubles, playing to 4-4 scores at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles through eight
games. The Bearcat duo of Alexandre Haggai and senior Arnav Jain dropped an 8-4
decision to the No. 57 doubles team in the nation while junior senior Sven
Vloedgraven and junior Gilbert Wong led the Bruins No. 32-ranked team, 5-4,
when the doubles point was decided. In singles play, Haggai had the best match
for the Bearcats, trailing 4-6, 2-3, in an unfinished match against the nation's
No. 103 singles player, Adrien Puget.
On Saturday, the Terriers faced Cal, a team with two ranked doubles teams
and five ranked singles players, including the No. 1 doubles team and No. 1
singles player. In doubles, the Boston U. tandem of junior Stefanie Nunic and
sophomore Vivien Laszloffy took four games from Jana Juricova and Mari Andersson,
the nation's top doubles team, in a match that was not finished. In singles
play, junior No. 4 Monika Mical dropped her first set against Marina Cossou,
0-6, but led in the second set, 4-2, in an unfinished match. In the No. 2
position, Laszloffy trailed, 0-6, 3-5, in her match against Andersson, the No.
23 player in the nation.
The losses marked the end of the dual-match season for America East
teams. However, Binghamton senior Sven Vloedgraven, the nation's No. 77 singles
player, will play in the field of 64 at the NCAA Singles Championship in
Stanford, Calif., beginning May 25.
