NEW HAVEN, Conn.-
Both
the Stony Brook University women and men, as well as the UMBC women, swept
their way into the semifinals of the 2011 America East Tennis Championships. The
No. 3 Stony Brook women defeated No. 6 University of Hartford, 4-0, while No. 4
UMBC took care of No. 5 Albany, also by a 4-0 score. For the men, fourth-ranked
Stony Brook wrapped up the first day of the tournament with a 4-0 win over No.
5 Hartford.
In the women's first round, Stony Brook dropped just seven
games total as it dispatched Hartford, 4-0. The Seawolves took the doubles
point as sophomore Aylin Mehter and junior Prerana Appineni grabbed an 8-2
victory over Hartford freshman Katina Zampas and junior Maggie Sabatino in the
top spot. Senior Katherine Hanson teamed
with junior Salome Mkervalidze to win in No. 2 doubles, 8-2, while sophomore
Nini Lagvilava and senior Gayatri Krishnan did not drop a game in an 8-0 win from
the third spot. The Seawolves were strong in the singles matches as well as Krishnan,
Mkervalidze and Appineni each won their first round matches. Krishnan and
Mkervalidze won in straight sets without dropping a game, 6-0, 6-0, from the
No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Appineni posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over
Hartford senior Nicole Haynal from the third position. Stony Brook was leading
in the other three singles matches when the win was finalized.
In the other women's first-round matchup, UMBC earned a 4-0
win over Albany. The Retrievers took the doubles point thanks to an 8-0 win by
freshman Kim Berghaus and senior Emily Mannix in the second position and an 8-1
win from sophomore Heidi Danielsson and freshman Josefin Stange-Jonsson in the
third position. Danielsson and Stange-Jonssonn then went on to earn singles
victories. Danielsson took a 6-2, 6-1 decision in the No. 4 spot while
Stange-Jonsson earned a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6. Sophomore Julia Gregara-Cano sealed
the Retriever victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win from the third position. Albany
senior Melissa Coughlin was a bright spot for the Great Danes as she led her
opponent, 6-3, 0-2, when the match was suspended.
On the men's side, Stony Brook advanced out of its
first-round match with Hartford with a 4-0 victory. The No. 1 doubles team of
sophomore Roope Kailaheimo and Mehmet Duru won, 8-2, while the No. 3 duo of freshmen
Nikita Fomin and Francesco Arciuli grabbed an 8-0 to earn the Seawolves the
doubles point. Fomin then earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles slot while
Duru and junior Max Sztabholz won from the No. 6 and No. 5 slots, respectively,
by identical 6-1, 6-2 scores.
