In
an effort to honor African-American alumni from each of the nine
schools affiliated with the America East, the conference is putting
together a nine-part video series featuring one prominent
African-American alum from each school. This video series highlights the
great history and success that African-American graduates from America
East schools have had and also displays the variety of different jobs
and backgrounds that these alumni have made an impact on after
graduation.
For Boston University alum T. Ewell Hopkins (class of 1982),
the opportunity to serve the local community in Martha's Vineyard has proven to
be a rewarding career path. Following his graduation from Boston U. where he
ran track and field for the Terriers, Hopkins worked a variety of different
jobs in the corporate world, including a position with the Oracle Corporation.
In his current position as the Executive Director of the
Island Affordable Housing Fund of Martha's Vineyard, Hopkins works to alleviate
the housing crisis of Martha's Vineyard. This opportunity has extra meaning for
Hopkins, as he and his family have long had a passion for the people and the
way of life on Martha's Vineyard.
With his focus on philanthropy and improving the local
community he lives in, Hopkins has made improving the lives of the people
surrounding him a clear focus. Even with his success in the business world,
Hopkins' passion for his community should serve as motivation to any younger
African-Americans who want to see the area in which they were raised thrive.
