CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - A pair of America East tennis players
went undefeated last week to lead their teams to two wins and earn Player of
the Week Honors. Stony Brook University junior Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla./Wharton)
took the Male Player of the Week nod while Boston University junior Stefanie
Nunic (New York, N.Y./Broward Virtual Education)
garnered Female Player of the Week honors.
Wong won all four of his matches last week, going 2-0 in
doubles and 2-0 in singles. At No. 4 singles, Wong won, 6-2, 6-1, against Army
and then 6-3, 6-2, against UConn. Wong teamed with junior Mehmet Duru (Istanbul, Turkey/Chicago State) to win, 8-6, at No.
2 doubles against Army. He then teamed Ryan Schmitz for an 8-2 win at No. 3
doubles against UConn.
Nunic, the 2010 America East Player of the Year, had a
stellar week. Against No. 64 Dartmouth, Nunic defeated No. 94 Molly Scott, 6-3,
6-0. The junior also won at the top doubles spot, 8-3. On Sunday against
Davidson, she won the top singles spot, 6-2, 6-0, and also won the top doubles
spot, 8-2.
University at Albany started off the 2011 spring season with
losses to St. Joseph's (5-2) and NJIT (6-1). Against the Hawks, Albany's two
victories came in singles play, at the fourth and fifth positions. Junior
Aubrey Brooks (Guilford, Conn./Guilford), playing in the No. 4 slot, defeated
Laura Matz, 4-6, 1-2, before Matz retired. Senior Melissa Coughlin (Auburn,
N.Y./Auburn) posted a 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 win over Tara Walsh at No. 5 singles. Versus
NJIT, the Great Danes (0-2) earned their lone point with a 6-3, 6-4 win by
Brooks over Hannelore MacDonald at No. 4 singles. Albany will return to action
on Friday, February 18, when the Great Danes host Rhode Island.
Binghamton University women's tennis (2-2) split a pair of
dual matches over the weekend. The Bearcats fell to cross-town rival Cornell on
Saturday. Junior Emma Leibowicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) secured the
team's lone point with a win at sixth singles. On Sunday, Binghamton blanked
its opponent with a 7-0 triumph over host Bucknell. All six Bearcats posted a
pair of victories despite a few lineup changes that pitted each player with a
different teammate from Saturday in the doubles portion of competition. Junior
Marina Bykovskaya (Saratov, Russia/Secondary School 8) dropped only two games
between her singles and doubles matches, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth
singles and an 8-1 victory after getting bumped up to first doubles. The
Binghamton men (0-4), ranked No. 59 in the country, remained winless after a
pair of defeats in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Bearcats dropped a narrow 4-3
decision to reigning MAC champion Western Michigan before losing, 5-2, to the
No. 40 Huskers. Binghamton has played three ranked opponents early and has more
dual losses than the entire 2009-10 season when the team posted a
record-setting 25-2 campaign. Senior leaders Sven Vloedgraven (Lochem,
Netherlands/Isendoorn College) and Arnav Jain (Mumbai, India/J.M.L. School)
have started to pick up momentum, however, with each player winning both his
singles matches on the week. Vloedgraven, ranked No. 55 nationally, improved to
13-7 this season. Jain is a team-best 3-1 in duals. The Bearcats have earned
the No. 3 seed for the upcoming 10-team ECAC Championship, which is being
hosted by Harvard on February 18-21. The Bearcats will face sixth-seeded Yale
in their first match on Saturday.
The Boston University women (4-2) earned two victories last
week to extend their winning streak to four matches. On Wednesday against No.
64 Dartmouth, junior Stefanie Nunic (New York,
N.Y./Broward Virtual Education) and sophomore Vivien Laszloffy (Budapest, Hungary/Thomas Mann Gymnasium) teamed
together for an easy, 8-3 doubles victory before winning two points in singles
action. Nunic was impressive, dropping just three games against the nation's No.
94 player Molly Scott. Freshman Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis (Haltern am See, Germany/Joseph Konig Gymnasium)
captured the clinching point in three sets for the upset against Dartmouth. On
Sunday, Boston U. easily swept through Davidson, 7-0. The Terriers will next
host Syracuse on Sunday (Feb. 20) at 9 a.m. The men (3-3) avenged last year's
loss to Sacred Heart with a 4-3 victory on Sunday. The Terrier men won the
doubles point with three identical scores of 8-4. Junior Michael Kopelman (Treasure Island, Fla./Florida State), sophomore
Ferdinand Brunet (London, England/Stony Brook)
and freshman Jesse Frieder (Providence, R.I./The
Wheeler School) each captured a point in singles action. All three wins
required just two sets to help Boston U. earn its second consecutive victory at
home. The Terriers will next host Bryant on Sunday (Feb. 20) at 3 p.m.
University of Hartford has yet to open its spring schedule.
The Hawks take to the courts February 25 against Fairfield.
The UMBC men's tennis team rallied for a dramatic, 4-3 win
at Old Dominion and improved to 5-1 on the young season. The win by the
Retrievers snapped ODU's eight-match winning streak in a marathon match which
took six hours to complete. UMBC was swept in doubles and split the first four
singles matches to trail, 3-2. Senior No. 6 Mwali Phiri (Yonkers,
N.Y./Tuckahoe/Tyler J.C.) came back from a 5-2 deficit to Alfredo Rodriguez in
the third set to win, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. The two-year letterwinner fought off a
match point down 5-3 in the third. Then sophomore Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur
Marne, France) edged Fahoum Fahoum, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to capture
the match for the Retrievers. UMBC won its other two matches in three sets as
well, as junior No. 2 Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) rallied to
defeat Benjamin Chomette, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2. Adewumi staved off three match points
down 5-6 in the second set. Sophomore No. 4 Adam Duprat (Bobigny, France)
outlasted Albert Ochagavia, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. UMBC travels to Richmond, Va., for a
match against VCU on Feb. 20. The UMBC women won the doubles point, but fell at
Old Dominion, 5-2, on February 12. Sophomore Kyri Hadji (West
Sunshine, Australia/Westbourne Grammar) defeated Arina Alilueva,
7-5, 6-1, for UMBC's lone singles victory. Hadji combined with senior Emily
Mannix (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) to win, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles and
clinch the doubles point. The Retrievers also dropped a 7-0 decision at
30th-ranked VCU on February 13. UMBC will play three matches in two days at
Virginia Tech on February 19-20, facing Radford, Davidson and the host Hokies.
Stony Brook University played against Army and UConn over
the weekend, with both the men's and women's teams recording wins in both
matches. The men defeated Army, 6-1, and then shut out UConn, 7-0. The women defeated Army, 4-3, before knocking
off UConn, 6-1. The men dropped just one of 12 singles matches they played and
won nine of those 11 matches in straight sets. Junior Mitch Wong (Tampa, Fla/Wharton) went 4-0 on the weekend for the men, winning both
his singles in straights sets at the No. 4 position. He also went 2-0 in
doubles play. On the women's side, the Seawolves had a 3-2 lead against Army
when sophomore Nini Lagvilava (Tbilisi, Georgia/Number 29)
won the deciding match at No. 2 singles in straight sets. Senior Gayatri
Krishnan (Chennai, India/National Inst. of Open
Schooling) won all four of her matches on the weekend, going 2-0 at No.
5 singles and 2-0 in doubles play. Both the Seawolves' men's and women's teams
are on the road again this weekend, traveling to Philadelphia to take on Saint
Joseph's February 18 and Penn February 19.
