NEW
HAVEN, Conn. - The Boston University women pulled out a hard-fought 4-3 victory
over top-seeded Binghamton University to win their 17th straight
conference crown while the Bearcat men defended their title with a 4-0 win over
UMBC.
The
Binghamton women came out swinging, cruising to victory in doubles with wins at
the No. 2 and 3 spots. But the Terriers rallied back, claiming the first singles
victory of the day with a win at No. 6. Binghamton answered back, winning at
the third spot. The momentum kept swinging as Boston U. claimed a win at No. 1
singles before the Bearcats won at the No. 2 position to put them up 3-2. Sophomore
Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland/Penn State) then
tied the match at 3-3 with a straight set win at fifth singles. Tied at a set
apiece, the squads battled for the title at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Petra
Santini (Sibenik, Croatia/Gimnazija Za Dopisno
Obrazovanje Birotehnika), the 2010 Most Outstanding Player, clinched the
match for Boston U. with a third-set victory. The Terriers have earned their 12th
straight berth into the NCAA tournament.
The
Bearcat men claimed their sixth title in eight years with a 4-0 win over UMBC.
The Bearcats claimed the doubles point with a 9-7 victory at the second spot
after dropping a 9-8 decision at the third position. Senior Moshe Levy (Ra'ananna,
Israel/De-Cart), the 2010 Most Outstanding Player, and sophomore partner Alexandre
Haggi (St. Denis, Reunion Islands/Lycee Bellepierre) rallied back at second
