NEW HAVEN, Conn - The Binghamton University men will play
UMBC in the America East Men's Tennis Championship final while the Bearcat
women will take on Boston University in the women's championship match tomorrow
at 11 a.m.
The Binghamton men, who seek to defend their title tomorrow,
remained dominant this season, capturing their 19th straight win with a
semifinal victory over Boston U. The Bearcats won, 4-0, led by junior Sven
Vloedgraven (Lochem, Netherlands/Isendoorn College) and sophomore Gilbert Wong
(Hong Kong/Diocesan Boys School). Vloedgraven and Wong posted a decisive 8-2
victory over Boston U. at the top doubles spot. Vloedgraven then blanked the Terriers at the No. 1 singles
spot to capture Binghamton's first singles win of the day while Wong claimed a
spot in the championship final for the squad with a 6-3, 6-0 win at third
singles.
The Bearcats will face a Retriever squad that battled to a
hard-fought 4-3 upset over the Seawolves. In doubles action, the Retrievers
split the top two doubles matches with Stony Brook, finally capturing the point
with a come-from-behind 9-8 victory at third doubles. The squad got off to a quick start in singles, claiming a
win at No. 4 singles before Stony Brook rallied back with three victory of its
own at the No. 1, 5 and 6 spots. UMBC then regained the momentum when freshman
Adam Duprat (Bobigny, France) closed out a close third set, winning the
tiebreaker, 7-4, to tie the match at 3-3. Senior Fredi Voorman (Talinn,
Estonia/Audentes Private) then came up big for the Retrievers winning the
deciding match in a third set at second singles.
In women's semifinal action, the second-seeded Terriers
faced Stony Brook. The Terriers got off to a quick start, winning the doubles
point. But Stony Brook fought back hard in singles, claiming the first singles
victory with a win at the No. 3 position. Boston U. then rallied back to
capture three straight matches at the No, 2, 6 and 4 slots. Sophomore Petra Santini
(Sibenik, Croatia/Gimnazija Za Dopisno Obrazovanje Birotehnika) clinched the
match for Boston U. with her three-set win at the No. 4 spot.
The Terriers will face top-seeded Binghamton, which earned a
4-2 decision over UMBC today. The Bearcats
battled to win the doubles point, losing at first doubles but capturing wins at
the No. 2 and 3 positions. The squad kept the momentum going into singles,
claiming the first singles victory at the No, 4 spot. UMBC answered back with a
win at No. 3 before Binghamton posted a straight set victory at sixth singles. UMBC
continued to fight, earning a victory at No. 5 singles before junior Anna
Edelman (Great Neck, N.Y./Great Neck North) clinched the match for the Bearcats
with a third-set victory at the No. 2 spot.
In the women's consolation round, Albany defeated Hartford,
4-0 to claim fifth place. After sweeping the doubles point, the Great Danes
earned three singles wins at the No. 2, 4, and 5 spots.
In the men's consolation, Stony Brook claimed third with a
4-2 win over Boston U. The Seawolves earned the doubles point with a 9-7 win at the top spot. While the Terriers hung tough capturing wins at No. 2 and 6 singles, the Stony Brook squad proved to be too strong, pulling out the match with victories at No. 3, 4 and 5 singles.
