UMBC, Stony Brook and Boston U. Earn Wins on Day One of the Men's and Women's Tennis Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The UMBC and Stony Brook University women captured 4-0 wins to advance to the America East Women's Tennis Championship semifinals tomorrow at 10 a.m. while the Boston U. men earned a 4-0 victory over Hartford to move into the men's semifinals tomorrow against Binghamton.

The #3 Seawolves jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead over the #6 Hawks, capturing the doubles point with 8-0 wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots.  Senior Paola Rodolfi (Asuncion, Paraguay/Sek Paraguay International) then captured Stony Brook's first singles win, posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelund), ranked 115th in the country, earned a third point for the squad, blanking Hartford at second singles before junior Gayatri Krishnan (Chennai, India/National Inst. of Open Schooling) clinched the match for the Seawolves with a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 position. Stony Brook faces #2 Boston University, who has captured the last 16 consecutive championship titles, at 1 p.m. tomorrow (May 1).

The #4 Retrievers advance to the semifinals where they will face the top seeded Bearcats at 1 p.m. after claiming a 4-0 win over #5 Albany. Winning the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 spot, UMBC entered singles up 1-0. Freshman Lorena Valente (Florianopolis, Brazil/Coracao de Jesus) then quickly won a second point for the squad in her first championship match, blanking Albany at third singles. Senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) and sophomore Carmen Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) then clinched the match with wins at No. 1 and 2 singles.

Fourth-seeded Boston U. earned a decisive 4-0 win over #5 Hartford. The Terriers won the doubles point, claiming wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. In singles, sophomore Bill Kring (Charlton, Mass./Colgate) won at No. 4 singles followed by senior James Bernstein (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who won at the No. 6 spot. Freshman Josh Friedman (Los Angeles, Calif./Milken Community) claimed the deciding point with a win at second singles. Boston U. faces #1 Binghamton, the defending champion, tomorrow at 10 a.m.
