Nearly 600 Student-Athletes Named to Fall Academic Honor Roll - AmericaEast.com

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The America East Conference office announced on Wednesday (Feb. 3) that 596 of its fall student-athletes, over 62 percent of the athletes eligible to compete, have been named to the America East 2009 Fall Academic Honor Roll. Students had to earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher last semester to receive this recognition. Of those student-athletes, 268 earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the fall semester with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.

“The academic excellence our student-athletes continue to achieve is impressive,” said America East Commissioner Patrick Nero. “Their commitment to academic endeavors while balancing the rigors of being a Division I athlete, is what defines us as a conference more than anything else.”

University of New Hampshire had the most student-athletes (86) named to the Academic Honor Roll. University of Vermont came in second (80), followed by University at Albany (71), Boston University (69), Binghamton University (65), Stony Brook University (57), University of Hartford (55), University of Maine (54) and UMBC (43). Fairfield University, an associate member for the sport of field hockey, had 16 student-athletes earn Academic Honor Roll status.

Each of America East’s nine institutions had at least half of its student-athletes named to the honor roll. Maine had the highest percentage of athletes named (70.1 percent), followed by Vermont (67.2), Hartford (67.1), Binghamton (66.3), New Hampshire (63.7), Albany (63.4), Boston U. (57.9), Stony Brook (57.0) and UMBC (50.0). Fairfield placed 61.5 percent of its field hockey team on the honor roll. Overall, 62.4 percent of America East student-athletes who participated in a fall sport carried a 3.0 GPA last semester.

The Boston University women’s soccer team, which also captured its third straight conference title this past fall, and UNH’s women’s cross country squad tied for the most honor roll recipients with a total of 23 student-athletes. The men's soccer programs at Binghamton, Hartford and New Hampshire tied for the honor on the men’s side with 16 recipients apiece.

America East is proud to have one of the most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 20 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes his/herself as the top student-athlete in his/her sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finally, the Academic Cup is awarded to the school with the highest cumulative GPA among its student-athletes for that academic year.
