CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Stony Brook University sophomore Anna Pieschl (Gothenburg, Sweeden/Katrinelund) earned a comeback win against Army to clinch the match, 4-3, for the Seawolves to capture this week’s female Tennis Player of the Week award. Fellow Seawolf junior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary/Altisz Gymnasium) claims the men’s Tennis Player of the Week award for the week ending February 14 after leading his squad to a pair of wins.

Pieschl went 3-0 in both singles and doubles this past weekend to help Stony Brook to wins over Fordham, Connecticut and Army. On Saturday, the Seawolves were tied 3-3 with Army. Pieschl’s No. 4 singles match was the last on and the deciding point. Down a set and three games in the second, Pieschl rallied back to win the second set 6-4 and the third 7-5. Her win gave Stony Brook a 4-3 victory over the five-time Patriot League champion.

Rummel went 4-0 over the weekend, winning both his singles and doubles matches against Army and Connecticut. Rummel and freshman partner Roope Kailaheimo (Helsinki, Finland/Mäkelänrinteen Lukio) claimed the only Seawolf doubles win against Army, winning 9-8 at No. 2 doubles. He then went on to claim a come-from-behind three-set victory at the No. 1 spot to complete Stony Brook’s singles sweep. Against Connecticut, Rummel again posted victories at No. 2 doubles and No. 1 singles as the team improved to 3-0 in dual matches this season.

Albany – The Great Danes defeated Skidmore, 6-1, on Tuesday. Albany got off to a quick start, winning two of the three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Susan Ma (Parkville, Mo./Park Hills South) and Laine Mackey (Leawood, Kan./Shawnee Mission) won, 8-5, while junior Livia Gherman (Zalau Salaj, Romania/Washington State/Colegiul National Silvania) and senior partner Caitlin Crowley (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) claimed an 8-3 victory at No. 2 doubles. All four players remained undefeated on the day, downing the Thoroughbreds in the top four singles spots. Sophomore Aubrey Brooks (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) claimed the sixth point for the Great Danes with a straight-set win at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-0. Albany will take a short break and return to action on March 6 when the squad hosts Fordham.

Binghamton – The Bearcat women next compete on Friday, February 19 at Cornell while the men travel to Columbia on Friday.

Boston U. – The Terrier men dropped a 6-1 decision to crosstown rival Boston College on Sunday, February 14. Boston College swept the doubles point even though Boston U.’s freshmen Alex Hallenbeck (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) and Marcus Vanberkel (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal) hung tough before falling, 8-5, to the Eagles. Down 0-1, the Terriers couldn’t battle back, dropping the top-five singles matches. Sophomore Regis Chang (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) claimed the lone win for Boston U., battling back from a set down to claim the match in a 10-point tie-breaker in lieu of a third set, 10-3. The men next compete on February 21 when they host Bryant. The Boston U. women participated in the ECAC Division I women’s indoor tennis championship over the weekend. The Terrier women fell to No. 43 Yale in the first round of the tournament, 6-1. The Bulldogs swept the doubles. Boston U. sophomore Stefanie Nunic (New York, N.Y./Broward Virtual Education) came up with a big win for the team over Yale’s No.87 Stephanie Kent, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles spot. But the Bulldogs claimed two two-set victories at No. 2 and 5 singles to go up 3-1 before the Terriers dropped three three-set matches. Boston U. then faced Cornell, downing the Big Red, 6-1. The Terriers posted a win at No. 2 doubles and had a chance to claim the doubles point, but couldn’t pull out a tight match at No. 1 doubles. Cornell’s 1-0 lead didn’t last long as the Terriers quickly captured straight-set wins at No. 1, 4 and 6 singles. Boston U. went on to sweep all six singles matches. The Terriers then met No. 63 Brown in the consolation bracket finals, falling to the Bears, 4-1. Boston U. again claimed a victory at No. 2 doubles with senior Francine Whu (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Technical) and sophomore Monika Mical (Stalowa Wola, Poland/Penn State) winning  8-3, but the Terriers couldn’t pull out the doubles point. Brown carried its momentum into singles capturing wins at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles to clinch the victory. Nunic again captured the lone point for the squad defeating Brown’s No. 89 Casey Herzberg 7-6, 7-6 at the No. 1 singles spot. The Terriers next host conference rival UMBC on February 28.

Hartford – The Hawks men’s and women’s teams begin competition on Friday, February 26 when they host conference foe UMBC.

UMBC – The Retriever women improved to 3-0 in dual matches after blanking local rival Morgan State on February 13. UMBC got off to a quick start, dropping only six games in doubles. Entering singles up 1-0, the Retrievers kept the momentum, blanking the Bears at No. 5 and 6 singles. The Retrievers didn’t lose a set as senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) completed the singles sweep, defeating Victoria Luyyanenko 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 singles spot. The women next travel to Richmond on Saturday, February 20. The UMBC men extended their winning streak to four straight with a 7-0 victory over Morgan State on Saturday, February 13. The Retrievers dropped only three games as they swept the Bears in doubles. Senior Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia/Audentes Private) and sophomore partner Allen Tsang (Wellesley, Mass./American Heritage (Fla.)) blanked Morgan State at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, before Voorman went on to win at No. 2 singles in straight sets. The Retrievers didn’t drop a set as senior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) clinched the UMBC singles sweep with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. The men return to action on Friday, February 19 when they take on No. 69 Yale.

Stony Brook – The Seawolf men remain unbeaten this spring, improving to 3-0 in dual matches after defeating Army, 6-1, and Connecticut, 7-0, on Saturday. Ivan Rummel and partner Roope Kailaheimo pulled out a tight doubles match at No. 2 doubles, 9-8, but the Seawolves couldn’t capture the doubles point. But Army’s lead didn’t last long as Stony Brook rebounded to claim all six singles matches. Coming back from a set down, Rummel clinched the singles sweep with a three-set victory, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. The men then blanked Connecticut, getting off to a fast start with a sweep of the doubles point. The Seawolves then swept all six singles in straight sets. The men next play Columbia on Saturday, February 20. The women improve to 4-1 on the season with victories this past weekend over Fordham, Army and Connecticut. The Retrievers blanked Fordham, 7-0 on Friday without dropping a set. After sweeping the doubles point, UMBC didn’t drop a game at No. 4, 5 or 6 singles and quickly clinched the dual match win before sophomore Katherine Hanson (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) completed the sweep at No. 2 singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. The women then faced Army on Saturday, capturing a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Stony Brook hung on for an 8-7 (3) win at No. 2 doubles, but dropped the doubles point to start singles down 0-1. The Seawolves quickly rebounded with straight set wins at the No. 5 and 6 singles spot to put the team up 2-1. The Black Knights then evened the score at 2-2 with a two-set victory of their own at No.1 singles. The match remained tied after Stony Brook posted a win at No. 2 singles and Army captured No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, Anna Pieschl clinched the win for the Seawolves, coming back from 1-6, 1-4 down to win in the third set 7-5. After the close match against Army, Stony Brook faced Connecticut. The Seawolves got off to a slow start, dropping the doubles point. The team then fought to sweep the singles, completing the sweep after winning three close three-set matches. The women next travel to St. John’s on Wednesday, February 17.
