CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –
Reigning America East men’s tennis champion Binghamton University enters the 2010 season led by top-ranked Northeast regional singles player junior Sven Vloedgraven (Lochem, Netherlands/Isendoorn College), who was last year’s conference Player of the Year and Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Sixteen-time defending women’s champion Boston University also enters the season strong ranked 61st in the ITA national rankings.

Vloedgraven, who went 13-5 this fall, earned the top regional ranking after capturing the ITA Northeast Regional title and advancing to the ITA National Indoor Championship. Vloedgraven was the first Bearcat to advance to the Indoor championship, and his regional ranking is the highest of any Binghamton player since it became a Division I institution in 2001. During the fall, he also captured a fourth-place finish at the University of Virginia Classic and went 8-4 in doubles with sophomore partner Gilbert Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesan Boys School). The duo earned a Northeast doubles ranking of 10th.

Stony Brook University junior Ivan Rummel (Budapest, Hungary/Altisz Gymnasium) also captured a men’s singles ranking, placing 18th in the region. In the fall, Rummel finished second at the Stony Brook Invitational before advancing to the quarterfinals of the ITA Regionals.

After starting last season unranked nationally, the Terriers enter the 2010 season ranked 61st led by sophomore Stefanie Nunic (New York, N.Y./Broward Virtual Education). Nunic, who was the first league player to be named both 2009 America East women’s Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, claimed a regional ranking of 19th to start the season. During the fall, Nunic won the Brown Invitational flight ‘A’ title and captured a second-place finish at the Harvard Fall Classic.

Binghamton sophomore Jillian Santos (Flushing, N.Y./Cardozo) also earned a regional singles ranking, placing 20th. Santos advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA East Regional Championships in October. She also claimed 10th in the doubles regional rankings along with junior partner Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore West).

The Retrievers start their 2010 season at William and Mary on January 15. Action continues with the Bearcat men’s squad and both Terriers teams beginning their seasons on January 23 while the Great Danes and Binghamton’s women’s squad start play on January 29. Both Seawolves squads take on Fairfield on February 5 to start their seasons while the Hartford Hawks first compete on February 26 against conference foe UMBC.

Tennis Player of the Week will begin February 3.
