BOSTON - Boston
University, which won a conference-best seven championships, four regular-season crowns and four runner-up finishes during the 2008-09 season to capture the Stuart P.
Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup, was honored for its achievement before its women's soccer team downed UMass, 2-0, in front of a record 4,963 fans at Nickerson Field on Sunday. Commissioner Patrick Nero presented the trophy to President Dr. Robert Brown and Assistant Vice President and Director of Athletics Mike Lynch.
The Terriers tallied 396
points, the most in four years under the current scoring system and most overall
since the Terriers earned 426 points during the 2001-02 campaign, captured regular-season and tournament championships in men's soccer, women’s soccer and
women’s lacrosse, also captured championships in
women’s indoor track & field, women’s swimming & diving, women’s tennis
and softball. Boston U. won the regular-season title in women’s basketball
by becoming the fourth squad to complete the conference slate unbeaten. The
Terriers also earned runner-up finishes in women’s hoops, women’s cross country,
men’s swimming & diving and golf.
The Stuart P. Haskell,
Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is named in honor of the first commissioner of America
East. Haskell served as commissioner of the conference from 1987 until his
retirement in 1997.

Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin
competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings
receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference
play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place
receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East
(tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams
participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two
less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the
last-place institution which receives two points.
In sports where
regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, golf,
tennis, track and field, swimming and diving), the first-place institution at
the America East championship receives two points times the total number of
teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives
two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last
place team which receives two points.
