CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - With less than three weeks until the 2009 America East Tennis Championship, Stony Brook University's Youssef Fassi-Fehri (Fes, Morocco/Lycee Jean-Marc Bolvin) and Boston University's Stefanie Nunic (New York, N.Y./Broward Cirtual Education) helped extend their team's win streak to three matches each and haven been named the league's respective Male and Female Performers of the Week. The awards for the week ending April 6 were announded Tuesday afternoon.
Fassi-Fehri, a senior, led the Seawolves to three wins last week by going a perfect 3-0 in singles play and 4-1 overall. The 2006 America East Rookie of the Year, posted a straight-set victory at the No. 3 position over Long Island rival Hofstra and also had straight-set wins over Sacred Heart and Longwood at the fourth position. Fassi-Fehri, who moved to third all-time in program history with 57 singles triumphs, also picked up a key doubles win last week, a 9-8 (3) victory over Longwood, which gave SBU the doubles point.
Nunic paced the Terriers to their second win over a ranked opponent in as many matches to highlight a 4-0 week for the freshman. She posted a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory at second singles against 75th ranked South Florida and combined with last week's Performer of the Week, Francine Whu, to win at top doubles. Nunic then moved up to No. 1 and earned a straight-set win over Florida Gulf Coast and again teamed with Whu to win at top doubles in the Terriers 7-0 win.
The Seawolves, the 2006 and 07 conference champion, and the Terriers, the 15-time defending champ will compete at the 2009 America East Tennis Championship on April 24-26 at Yale University.
