CALGARY ? Dr.
Robert Corran, UVM's Associate Vice President and Director of
Athletics, will be inducted into the University of Calgary's Athletic Hall
of Fame in the fall. Calgary's Class of 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of
the most successful athletic season in the school's history.
The group will be formally inducted at the Dinos Hall of Fame Dinner on
Friday, Sept. 25 at the Roundup Centre, Stampede Park. Ticket information
will be available in the coming weeks, with the net proceeds from the
event supporting the 400-plus varsity student-athletes that compete at the
University of Calgary.
The Dinos won five national championships in 1988-89 ? football,
women’s basketball, men’s swimming, men’s volleyball, and women’s
volleyball. One player from each of those teams along with then-Athletic
Director Dr. Robert Corran make up the Hall of Fame Class of 2009.
“The 1989 season was really something special, and we’re thrilled
to be recognizing those athletes and teams in this way 20 years later,”
said Calgary Athletic Director Kevin Boyles, who captained the men’s
volleyball team to an undefeated season and the national title that year.
“All five athletes are deserving of this recognition in their own right,
while Dr. Corran was a true visionary in leading this Athletic Department
to the pinnacle of university sport in Canada.”
Corran served as Director of Athletics from 1985-96, a period which saw
the Dinos capture 19 CIS national championships. Born in Northern Ireland
and raised in Hamilton, Ont., Corran has put together an impressive resume
in North American collegiate sport, with success following him at every
stage. He served as President of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic
Union (now Canadian Interuniversity Sport) from 1990-92 and was heavily
involved on the international stage as Chef de Mission for Team Canada at
the 1993 Summer Universiade in Sheffield, England. He was also a member of
the executive committee of the Calgary Olympic Development Association
during his time in Calgary.
Corran went on to become Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the
University of Minnesota-Duluth and joined the University of Vermont as
Director of Athletics in 2003, adding the title of Associate Vice
President in 2007.
