NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Boston University's women's tennis team and Binghamton University's men's squad continued their respective dynasties in America East in convincing fashion at Yale University Tennis Center Sunday. The Terriers captured their 16th straight conference title with a 4-1 win over Binghamton, while the Bearcats won their fifth crown in seven years with a 4-1 victory over Stony Brook Sunday.
The two teams earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tennis Championships and will learn its draw on Tuesday between at approximately 5:20 p.m. EDT on ESPNews.
On the women's side, Boston U., the top seed, downed second-seeded Binghamton, 4-1, to claim its 20th league title in as many all-time appearances in the event. Freshman Stephanie Nunic, the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, set the tone for the Terriers with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Lauren Bates at top singles. She also teamed with Francine Whu, the 2008 MOP, to post an 8-3 triumph at top doubles. Whu recorded her own straight-set victory at second singles, as did Cori Lefkowith at the fourth position. Lefkowith teamed with Danielle Abraham for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to secure that point for Boston U., which will be making its 16th straight NCAA appearance.
In men's action, second-seeded Binghamton knocked off top-seeded Stony Brook to become just the second team to upend the No. 1 seed for the title since the current seeding format began in 1999. Freshman Gilbert Wong, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player for the men, led the Bearcats with a straight-set win at third singles against Stony Brook’s Jon Epstein. Teaming up with sophomore Sven Vloedgraven, Wong recorded an 8-3 win at first doubles while Vloedgraven went on to win at No. 1 singles defeating Halvar Dil, 6-2, 6-3. Arnav Jain earned the third singles victory for the Bearcats at No. 3 and paired with Moshe Levy for an 8-3 win at second doubles.
The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
