Albany, Boston U.'s Ana Johnson Lead After First Round of Golf Championship - AmericaEast.com

Loudonville, N.Y.-- The defending champion Albany Great Danes have a 13-stroke lead over second-place Boston University after day one at the 2009 America East Golf Championship at Shaker Ridge Country Club in Loudonville, N.Y. The picture-perfect weather led to record low scores, as four individual players carded scores below 80.

Albany carded a 320 as a team, followed by the Terriers at 333 on the 5,805-yard, par-72 course. University of Hartford completed day one with a score of 336 in third-place.

Since 2004, only three golfers had recorded sub-80 18-hole scores entering this year's championship, making the scores on Saturday quite impressive. Boston U.'s Ana Johnson leads all individuals going into the final round with a score of 75, a new championship low for an 18-hole round. The previous low was Hartford's Adrianna DiLonardo's 77 at the 2005 championship. Johnson finished strong, shooting one under par on the final seven holes of the course.

Great Dane teammates Annemarie Kissane and Stephanie Klein came back to the clubhouse each with a score of 79, tied with Hartford's Megan Claxton for second-place. Two more Great Danes, Jessica Signorelli and Corrin Conroy, shot 80 and 82, respectively to finish in fifth and sixth.

The final round will begin at 1 p.m. tomorrow, Sunday, April 26. Team Champion, individual medalist and Coach of the Year awards will all be announced following completion of play.
