CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- In the last week of regular season play
before the America East Championship, Stony Brook University’s Mitch Wong
(Tampa, Fla./Wharton) and Binghamton University’s Lauren Bates (Buffalo, N.Y./Kenmore
West) helped propel their teams past conference rivals to earn the season’s
last male and female Tennis Performer of the Week accolades.
Wong, a freshman,
earned dominant singles wins against conference foes UMBC and Hartford this
weekend, winning 6-1, 6-0 in both contests.
Bates, a sophomore,
won all three of her singles and doubles matches as the Bearcats went
3-0 in the last weekend of the regular season.
Bates was in the No. 1 slot for both singles and doubles in all three
matches and is 21-9 in singles play and 20-5 in doubles this season.
Albany- The Great Danes fell to America East rival
Binghamton this week, 7-0. Picking up
the lone doubles match for Albany was Charlotte Tatler and Holly Smith, who
teamed up at No. 2 doubles to defeat the Bearcats, 6-4, 6-2.
Binghamton- The Bearcats swept visiting America East rival Albany
in their last match of regular season play, 7-0. The win, highlighted by
sophomore Lauren Bates’ three singles and three doubles victories, was
Binghamton’s fifth consecutive and finished them at 5-0 against America East
opponents this season. Binghamton men's tennis lost a narrow 4-3 decision at
America East rival Stony Brook on Friday afternoon. The teams split the six
singles matches but the host Seawolves captured the pivotal doubles point to
open the match. Sophomore Sven Vloedgraven and freshman Gilbert Wong teamed for
a win at No. 1 doubles before winning their singles matches at Nos. 1 and 3
respectively.
Boston- The Terriers did not compete and will return to
action at the America East Championship this weekend at Yale. The women, who are ranked 62nd in
the nation, finished the regular season with a record of 13-5. The men enter the championship with a record
of 3-15 and are coming off a 7-0 sweep of Holy Cross a week ago.
Hartford- Sophomore captain Nikki Haynal earned three wins
last week against Providence and Marist, defeating Marist’s Retta Byron in
come-from-behind fashion- 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-0).
The Hawks lost their last four matches and head into the America East
Championship at 1-10.
UMBC- The UMBC men extended their winning streak to five
with a 7-0 shutout of Hartford at Stony Brook on April 18, but had the streak
snapped, 5-2, to the host Seawolves on March 19. Senior Nick Savage-Pollock won
all four matches against the conference foes and is currently 11-7 in singles
competition this Spring and 15-3 in doubles. UMBC is scheduled to host St.
Joseph’s in a make-up match on Tuesday before competing in the conference
championships. For the women, sophomore
Ana Mungo defeated Stony Brook’s 87th-ranked Katherine Hanson at No.
1 singles, and won both singles and doubles matches in the squads 7-0 win over
conference foe Hartford. Freshman Carmen Jackman, who was 7-3 in singles this
spring and 9-2 in doubles, combined with senior Cornelia Carapcea to win all five matches at No. 2 doubles down the stretch. The
women enter the conference at 6-6 during the regular season.
Stony Brook- Stony Brook’s men’s and women’s tennis teams
continued their late season surge when both the men’s and women’s teams picked
up key America East victories over UMBC, both by scores of 5-2 in their regular
season finales. The victories extended the men’s winning streak to eight, while
the women’s team closed out the regular season with six consecutive victories. On
the men’s side Stony Brook (16-4) won two of the three doubles matches a freshman
Mitch Wong made it 2-0 for Stony Brook when he picked up an easy 6-1, 6-0 win
at No. 6 to start off singles play. the Stony Brook (12-2) women also started
out with the doubles point by taking two of the three contests. The point came
down to the No. 1 position where the SBU team of freshmen Anna Pieschl and
Gayatri Krishnan held off the Retrievers by a 9-7 score. The men enter the America East Championship
with a 16-4 record while the women finish the regular season at 12-2.
