Marcos And Crowley Earn Weekly Tennis Accolades - AmericaEast.com
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Stony Brook University’s Bertrand Marcos (Paris, France/Jean de La Fontaine) and University at Albany’s Caitlin Crowley (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston lake) won all of their matches last week to earn America East Male and Female Performer of the Week accolades.
Marcos recorded wins in both singles and doubles in the Seawolves’ only match last week, a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson. In doubles, the freshman teamed with IIan Shvartz to earn an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position, the teams only doubles win of the day. The singles victory was Marcos’ third straight.
Crowley, who did not drop a game all week, recorded a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in singles action and went on to team up with Kim Weltman for an 8-0 win in doubles in Albany’s 7-0 win at Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday. The following day, against Cal State Fullerton, the sophomore picked up another 6-0, 6-0 singles win and an 8-0 win in doubles en route to a 5-2 Great Dane victory.
Albany- The Great Danes traveled to California this week, downing Cal State Bakersfield, 7-0, on Thursday and Cal State Fullerton, 5-2, on Friday. Caitlin Crowley led the squad, recording a 6-0, 6-0 sweep in singles action and an 8-0 win alongside teammate Kim Weltman in doubles on Thursday. On Friday, Crowley was the only Albany player who did not drop a set in her win.
Binghamton- The Bearcat women defeated visiting Fairleigh Dickinson this week in a 7-0 decision marking the team’s 10th victory in its last 11 matches. On Thursday, Binghamton defeated America East rival UMBC, 5-2, with the help of Yulia Smirnova, a sophomore who won her No. 3 singles match in the victory. The men’s team won five of their six singles matches to down the College of Charleston, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon.
Boston- The Terrier women, who are ranked 64th nationally, knocked off its third nationally-ranked opponent of the season with a 4-3 decision over cross-town rival No. 73 Boston College. Freshman Stefanie Nunic won the top singles match and went on to earn a doubles victory alongside junior Francine Whu to help propel the Terriers past the Eagles. Senior Charles Weinstein earned the lone point for Boston as the men fell to Connecticut in a 6-1 decision.
Hartford- The Hartford women swept three doubles matches against visiting Wagner on Saturday to break a 3-3 stalemate following the singles session. Kara Pease, Maggie Sabatino and Nikki Haynal combined for three singles points and went on to win each of their respective doubles matches. For the men, freshman Aneil Bhalla posted a perfect 4-0 record last week sweeping two matches at No. 3 singles and two matches at No.1 doubles with partner Ricky Dove. The squad defeated Wagner, 7-0, in its first dual match victory this season, and fell to Holy Cross, 4-3.
UMBC- Both UMBC men and women’s team earned victories over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday at the Retriever Tennis Complex. The win extended the men’s win streak to four, moving them to 10-6 on the season. Junior Chris Meyer and freshman Allen Tsang each won their respective matches as the team combined to sweep three doubles matches and take four of the six singles matches. For the women, the win evened up their record to 5-5 and freshman Carmen Jackman won for the fifth time in the last six matches, improving to 7-3 this spring.
Stony Brook- With this week’s 5-2 win over Fairleigh Dickinson, the Stony Brook men have won their last four matches to move to 12-4 on the season, already two games ahead of last season’s win total. Freshman Bertrand Marcos earned wins in both singles and doubles in the victory as it marked his third consecutive win in singles play. On the women’s side, the Seawolves earned their third straight victory and moved to 9-2 overall. Rookie Anna Pieschl won both her singles and doubles matches in last week 6-1 over Fairleigh Dickinson and has won 11 of her last 12 matches dating back to September.
