CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Stony Brook University’s Jon Epstein (Silver Spring, Md./Hebrew Acad.) and Boston University’s Francine Whu (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Technical) earn this weeks America East male and Female Peformer of the Week accolades.
Epstein, a junior, earned one of just two victories for the Seawolves in their loss to St. John’s this week, improving his record at No. 3 singles to 7-1 this season.
Whu recorded victories in both singles and doubles during the Terriers’ overthrow of No. 52 Virginia Commonwealth University, marking the Terriers’ first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2007. Earlier in the week, the junior knocked off No. 124 Charleen Haarhoff of No. 55 Old Dominion in three sets.
Albany- The Great Danes traveled to Army this week and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Black Knights despite single match victories by seniors Kim Weltman and Charlotte Tatler. Weltman also teamed up with Aubrey Brooks to earn the lone doubles victory for Albany on the day. Albany will host conference rival Hartford on Wednesday and Hofstra on Saturday.

Binghamton- Binghamton women extended their winning streak to six matches with a win against conference rival Stony Brook on Saturday. Sophomore Laura Bates went a combined 4-0 at first singles and doubles this week, earning victories against the Seawolves and Villanova to put her record to 17-7 in singles and 15-4 in doubles this season. The men earned a 6-1 victory over Georgetown, but fell to No. 72 Old Dominion, 4-3.
Binghamton's Story
Boston- The Terrier women split two matches against nationally-ranked opponents this past weekend in Virginia, coming away with a 4-3 victory over No. 52 Virginia Commonwealth University and dropping a 3-4 decision to No. 55 Old Dominion. The win over VCU was the program’s first over a nationally-ranked opponent since 2007, and came after senior Cori Lefkowith came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to take the point. The men’s match against Holy Cross on Sunday was postponed due to poor weather conditions. The Terriers next host Hartford this Saturday (April 4) and NJIT on Sunday (April 5).
Boston's Story
Hartford- The University of Hartford men and women’s tennis team each dropped 7-0 decisions to the Sacred Heart Pioneers in a match-up of in-state foes this weekend. The men’s team falls to 0-8-1 overall in 2008-09, while the women’s team is now 1-9.
Hartford's Story
UMBC- The Retriever men did not compete last week while the women competed only once as two weekend matches (George Washington and George Mason, were postponed due to rain. The women dropped a 6-1 decision at the hands of Temple on March 25, and will return to action April 2, at Howard.
Stony Brook- The Stony Brook women dropped a close match to conference rival Binghamton at home in their only outing of the week, 4-3. Anna Pieschl’s singles win against Binghamton moved her to 10 wins for the season, second among the team. The men, who remain two wins away from matching their total from a year ago, saw their three-match win streak end with a 5-2 loss at the hands St. John’s this weekend.
