UMBC and Boston Earn Weekly Tennis Awards - AmericaEast.com
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- UMBC’s Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia/Audentes Private) and Boston University’s Stefanie Nunic (New York, N.Y./Broward Virtual Education) have earned the America East male and female Tennis Performer of the week award for the week ending March 15.
Voorman swept his singles and doubles matches this week as the Retrievers defeated Quinnipiac and Duquesne. The junior has now won seven of his last eight singles matches, and is 7-2 overall this spring. Additionally, Voorman has paired with senior Nick Savage-Pollock for a 6-2 doubles record this season.
Nunic posted a 4-0 record in singles competition during the Terriers’ spring training trip last week including a victory over the 120th-ranked player in the country. The freshman also earned a 2-2 record in doubles competition, leading the terriers to wins over James Madison and Florida Atlantic.
Albany- The Great Danes dropped their second decision of the season to Brown while earning victories against Colgate and Niagara last week, giving them a 7-2 record on the season. Senior Charlotte Tatler improved to an 11-3 singles record on the season, and is tied for the team’s lead in singles wins.
Binghamton- The Bearcats did not compete this week, and will return to action at Quinnipiac on Sunday, March 22.
Boston- The Terriers traveled to Florida last week and split their four matches, earning victories against James Madison (5-2) and Florida Atlantic while falling to No. 52 Florida International (4-3) and Richmond (4-3). The men’s squad has suffered four one-point losses and sits at 1-12 on the season. They will travel to Sacred Heart on Saturday, March 21, at 12 p.m.
Hartford- The Hawks will return to competition after Spring Break, on March 26.
UMBC- The UMBC women evened its record at 3-3 with wins at Towson (6-1) and vs. Quinnipiac (7-0) in their home opener this week, the first time the Retrievers have won back-to-back matches this season. On the men’s side, the Retrievers improved to 5-4 with wins over Quinnipiac (7-0) and Duquesne (5-2), and managed to win all three doubles matches against the Dukes.
Stony Brook- After earning a pair of wins over Lehigh (8-3) and Niagara (7-0) this week, the Stony Brook men are just one victory shy of reaching their win total from last season. The women improve to an impressive 6-1 record after defeating host Lehigh (7-0), with their only loss coming at the hands of America East rival Boston University. The last two victories for the women have been 7-0 decisions.
