2009 America East Women’s Basketball Championship

Title Game: #3 Vermont 74, #1 Boston U. 66

Sunday, March 15, 2009

Boston University head coach Kelly Greenberg

Opening Remarks:

“It’s a really tough loss. There are 12 women in there that I love and they gave everything they had. It really wasn’t their weekend in all honesty, it wasn’t just today.”

“They’re the greatest team in BU history, there’s no question, and I’m extremely proud of them.”

On offensive woes in the second half:

“We were stagnant a few times on offense and didn’t get a good look. We continued to get to the line and for some reason this weekend, we did not hit our free-throws.”

“They were playing tough man-to-man defense like we expected and we just got tight. I don’t think Christine had a great weekend and we really go where Christine Kinneary takes us.”

Vermont head coach Sharon Dawley

Opening Remarks:

“I can’t say enough about how well our girls stuck together. The leadership and the camaraderie got us through this whole tournament.”

“I think it all comes down to leadership and the leadership was remarkable this entire tournament.  And that’s what kept us together and that’s what got us the lead.”

On Courtnay Pilypaitis winning the Most Outstanding Player award:

“Courtnay is that type of player. When the clock is running down and you need to create something, you give the ball to Courtnay.”

Vermont junior guard Courtnay Pilypaitis

On losing to Hartford and Boston twice during the regular season and beating them both in the tournament:

“We know it’s hard to beat a team three times. We saw that when we played UNH in our first game. Teams just know you so well after the second game and we just knew that if we played 40 minutes that we could have a chance.”

On winning the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament:

“There are so many other people that could’ve won this award on my team and on BU. I think it’s a really big honor.”

Vermont junior guard May Kotsopoulos

“Our team is a lot different than we were when we played Hartford and BU. We grew up a lot together and came together at the right time.”
