2009 America East Women’s Basketball Championship Post Game Quotes

Quarterfinal #1: #4 Binghamton 66, #5 UMBC 54

March 13, 2009

Binghamton Head Coach Nicole Scholl

Opening Remarks:

“I’d like to congratulate UMBC who had a lot of young players who played very well for them this year. They’re always a tough opponent to play.”

“They played with a lot of heart tonight, and a lot of effort. For us this is the third time in the program’s history since going Division I that we advanced to the semi-finals.”

On the semifinal match-up:

“To me I like the matchup with either Boston or Albany. We’ve had success with both those teams and it’s tournament time and a lot of what matters is what your team is doing at that point and time. I think we’re sitting in a good spot right now.”

Binghamton junior guard Erica Carter

On the halftime lead:

“It’s tournament time and everybody is striving for the same goal and everybody is going to do whatever it takes to win so we knew that the ten point lead we had at half time, we’d have to keep it.”

Binghamton freshman point guard Andrea Holmes

On the difference from regular season to tournament games:

“To me this was just another conference game.  I know how important tournament time is but you just have to maintain composure.”

UMBC Head Coach Phil Stern

Opening Remarks:

“We’re really disappointed in our effort tonight. We had nine days to prepare for this game and usually we think when we do have a lot of time that we’re going to be better than most and we certainly didn’t play well tonight.”

“Everything went our way. Franceski was in foul trouble, and we couldn’t make a shot.  When you don’t shoot the ball well you need to do all the intangibles and we didn’t do that tonight. Hopefully our young team will learn.”

On the 2008-09 season:

“In one respect we overachieved by changing our system and only having two upperclassmen, but in the other respect we’re disappointed because we got off to a great start to the season and then went 2-9 in our last eleven.

UMBC freshman guard Michelle Kurowski

“They were pressuring us on the outside which led to back doors, but we weren’t hitting shots so it was disappointing.”
