CAMBRIDGE, Mass.-- The America East Conference office announced on Thursday that 603 of its fall student-athletes, over 61 percent of the athletes eligible to compete, have been named to the Fall 2008 America East Fall Academic Honor Roll. Students had to earn grade point averages of 3.0 or higher to receive this recognition. Of those student-athletes, 278 earned Commissioner’s Honor Roll status for completing the fall semester with grade point averages of 3.5 or higher.
University of Vermont had the most student-athletes (91) named to the Academic Honor Roll. University of Maine and University of New Hampshire tied for second with 82 apiece, followed by Binghamton University (77) and University at Albany (70). Boston University (57), Stony Brook University (56), University of Hartford (37) and UMBC (36) rounded out the nine member schools. Fairfield University, an associate member for the sport of field hockey, had 19 student-athletes earn Academic Honor Roll status.
Maine had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the honor roll (72.6 percent), barely edging Vermont (71.6) and Binghamton (71.0). Albany (64.8), New Hampshire (61.2), Stony Brook (56.6), Hartford (52.1), Boston U. (51.8) also all had over half of their student-athletes meet the requirements for the Academic Honor Roll.
The Vermont women’s cross country squad featured the most honor roll recipients with a total of 25 student-athletes. The Catamounts also had the most athletes recognized in women’s soccer (24) and field hockey (18). Albany held that honor in men’s soccer (23), while Stony Brook had the most men’s cross country athletes named (12). Binghamton and Maine tied for the most volleyball student-athletes with 10 apiece.
America East is proud to have one of most comprehensive academic awards programs in the country. In addition to the honor roll, an All-Academic team comprised of student-athletes that excel both academically and athletically is chosen in each of the conference’s 21 sports by a committee consisting of faculty athletic representatives, academic advisors and sports information directors. Additionally, a scholar-athlete, someone who distinguishes themselves as the top student-athlete in their sport, is awarded. From that group, one male and one female is selected the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The fall scholar-athletes will be named on Thursday, February 12.
