Barrio and Dwyer Added to America East Staff - AmericaEast.com
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? America East Commissioner Patrick Nero announced today that Brian Barrio, former Director of Compliance at The University of Southern California, and Chad Dwyer, former Director of Sport Administration at Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), have been hired in similar capacities for the conference office. Barrio will serve as Associate Commissioner for Compliance, while Dwyer will be brought on as Championship/Sport Administrator.
Barrio will act as a liaison to the league’s nine member institutions in the areas of compliance and student-athlete welfare. He will administer the conference compliance program including education efforts, interpretations, compliance reviews, waivers and secondary violations. Barrio will oversee the NCAA Special Assistance Fund, Student-Athlete Advisory Fund, National Letter of Intent and Coaches Certification Programs and all bylaws of the conference. He will also serve as a liaison to various conference committees, including the Board of Presidents, Athletic Directors Council, Faculty Athletic Representatives, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Compliance Administrators and Life Skills Coordinators.
Dwyer will serve as a primary liaison for championships and sport administration and coordinate the conference’s 21 championships. In this role, he will provide on-site championship management for selected sports and work directly with those coaches groups. Dwyer will also develop annual conference schedule for selected sports, compile annual RPI reviews, coordinate scheduling for in-season and post-season events, and administer regular season sports policies and standards for sports other than basketball.

Their skills and knowledge in these areas will serve as a great asset to our office, as well as our member institutions and student-athletes. ”
Prior to joining America East, Barrio spent two years at USC where he worked with coaches, administrators and student-athletes in the area of compliance. He also developed educational programs for athletes, staff, parents and boosters. Before USC, Barrio worked as Compliance Coordinator for the Ivy League. He has also completed compliance internships at Ohio State and Central Connecticut State Universities.
A graduate of Boston College, Barrio earned a B.A. in communications in 1999. He also received a law degree from The University of California - Hastings School of Law in 2005.
Dwyer has spent the last year working for the ECAC, the largest collegiate athletic conference in the country. After a year as an Asa S. Bushnell Championships Assistant, Dwyer was hired as Director of Sport Administration. In these roles, Dwyer assisted in the planning and execution of over 90 championships across all levels. His duties included coordinating the conference’s championship budget, securing championship sites and action as tournament director at select championships. Before joining the ECAC, Dwyer completed an athletic administration internship at Western New England College and was a graduate assistant football coach at Springfield College.
A native of Wakefield, Mass., Dwyer earned a bachelor’s in business administration in 2001 from Stonehill College, where he was a standout tight end on the football team. Dwyer also received a master’s in athletic administration from Springfield in 2007.
