SIMSBURY, Conn.-- The 2008 America East Golf Championship will take place this weekend, May 3-4, at the Simsbury Farms Golf Course in Simsbury, Connecticut where Albany, Boston University and Hartford will battle it out on the greens.
The first tee-off on Saturday is at 12 p.m., while the action will get underway on Sunday at 8 a.m. Top individual and team awards will be handed out at the completion of Sunday's round.
Boston University took home the 2007 title and will hope to repeat for the 2008 crown. The Terriers finished the spring season on a strong note, placing first out of 11 teams at the Jack Leaman Invitational in Hadley, Mass. on April 20. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mardeusz (Novi, Mich./Mercy), the Terriers' number one golfer for the championship this weekend, finished third carding a 165 over two days. Freshman Ana Johnson (Oconomowoc, Wis.), junior Allison Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.), junior Lauren Strong (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Dana DeStefano (Melville, N.Y.) will also take the course for Boston University. Strong was the top individual performer at last year's championship.
Albany won the first America East Women's Golf Championship in 2004, and will look for its first title since then at this year's event. The Great Danes' best team finish this year was a 678 score at the Hartford Invitational where they placed fifth. Sophomore Amanda McPhee (Winchester, Mass.), appearing in her first America East Championship, will tee-off in the number one position for Albany, followed by freshman Corrin Conroy (Oswego, N.Y.), sophomore Stephanie Signorelli (Fairport, N.Y.), senior Maggie Taylert (Ithaca, N.Y.) and junior Sun Kim (Flushing, N.Y.).
Hartford finished second at last year's championship and last won the meet in 2005. Senior Juliana Carrillo (Cali, Colombia) placed second individually at last year's championship and will play in Hartford's third position this weekend. The Hawks posted their best team finish on April 20, finishing second overall, 22 shots back of first-place with a score of 679 at the CCSU Invitational. Joining Carrillo on the greens this weekend for the Hawks are junior Megan Claxton (Calgary, Alberta), sophomore Sadie Heald (New Haven, Conn.), sophomore Paige Gauthier (Claremont, N.H.) and sophomore Kara Sikorski (Hatfield, Mass.).
