Boston U. Women, Binghamton Men Take Home Tennis Titles

NEW HAVEN, Conn.. - The Boston University women's tennis team and the Binghamton men's tennis squad won America East Tennis Championships on Sunday at the Yale Tennis Center. The Terriers and Bearcats earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tennis Championships and will learn its draw on Tuesday between 2 and 2:30 p.m.

On the women's side, Boston U., the top seed, downed third-seeded Binghamton, 4-2, to claim its 15th straight America East title. Francine Whu won her match at top singles in straight sets and was named the championship's Most Outstanding Player.

The Terriers also claimed wins at second, fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Binghamton's Yulia Smirnova grabbed her team's lone singles points. The Bearcats claimed the doubles point by winning two of three matches. Anna Edelman and Lauren Bates won their match at the top position, 9-8, while Smirnova and Danyelle Shapiro won at third doubles by the same score.

On the men's side, Binghamton edged second-seeded UMBC, the defending champion, 4-3, to win its fourth conference crown in six years. Arnev Jain won the decisive match at fifth singles in three sets to earn Most Outstanding Player honors.

Sven Vloengraven and Sebastian Dietz also won singles matches for the Bearcats, at the second and fourth position, respectively. Chris Meyer, Irfan Shamasidin and Fernando Ferreria earned points for the Retrievers by winning singles matches. Binghamton took the top two doubles matches, while the third was not completed.

The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
