Six Tabbed America East Scholar-Athletes - AmericaEast.com
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. ? Six student-athletes that participated in fall sports for the 2007-08 academic year, have been named America East Scholar-Athletes. Alex Felce (Stroud, England/Archway Comp.) from Stony Brook earned the honor in men’s cross country, while Catherine Parker (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) was chosen in women’s cross country. Boston University’s Sarah Hudak (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Regional) garnered scholar-athlete accolades in field hockey, Vermont’s Connor Tobin (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) received the award in men’s soccer, Hartford’s Elizabeth Cook (Halifax, Nova Scotia/Halifax Grammar) was named the women’s soccer recipient and Binghamton’s Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo./Grandview) was selected in volleyball.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East offered in the fall season including men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Member institutions of America East Conference for the 2007 fall season included University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University, University of Vermont, and associate member for field hockey Fairfield University.
A committee of athletic administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose an honoree in each of the six fall championship sports. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20.
Felce, a sophomore Arts & Sciences major, led the Seawolves to a second-place finish at this past fall’s America East Cross Country Championship. Felce won the individual competition in a time of 25:32.00 to claim all-conference honors for the second straight season. He was named to the America East All-Academic cross country squad and is an America East Honor Roll recipient.
Parker, a senior nursing major, placed second at the America East Cross Country Championship in October and earned All-America honors with a 28th place finish at the NCAA National competition. Parker, who has a 3.85 grade point average, is a member of the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll and has been selected to the All-Academic squad each of the nine seasons she has participate in either cross country or indoor and outdoor track & field. She was named to the 2007 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team last spring.
Hudak, a senior occupational therapy major, was named the 2007 America East Defensive Player of the Year. She was selected to the America East All-Academic field hockey squad and is a conference Honor Roll choice each of the past two years. Hudak anchored a defense that gave up just 1.20 goals per game, which ranked 13th in the nation. She started every game for the Terriers, which captured the America East Championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship.
Tobin, a junior back majoring in mechanical engineering, led a Vermont defense that recorded seven straight shutouts en route to the America East men’s soccer title. A first-team all-conference selection, as well as an all-championship honoree, Tobin is a member of UVM’s Honors College. He has been chosen to the America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll in each of his three seasons and is a two-time All-Academic team selection. Tobin
was also named to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Men’s Soccer Second Team.
Cook, a senior marketing major, earned women’s soccer second-team all-conference honors after compiling a 0.68 goals against average and eight shutouts. The 2006 America East Goalkeeper of the Year, Cook was an NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America third-team selection last fall and received COSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive year. In addition, she was selected to America East All-Academic team and is a three-time America East Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient.
Kane, a senior with a dual major in English and political science, was a first-team all-conference selection in volleyball for the second straight season. She led America East with 1.55 blocks per match and ranked eighth with a .260 hitting percentage. Kane is a two-time America East All-Academic team selection and is a Commissioner’s Honor Roll recipient.
