CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- America East teams in the sports of women's soccer, field hockey and volleyball played their first full slate of conference action this weekend.
In women's soccer action on Sunday: Marisa Viola of Stony Brook extended her streak of consecutive shutout minutes to 451:47 as Stony Brook defeated UMBC, 3-0; Laura Martel scored two goals as Maine won at Albany, 4-0. Tiya Gallegos' goal in the 56th minute was the difference as Boston University defeated Vermont, 1-0. New Hampshire sccored two goals less than five minutes apart in the second half to defeat Binghamton, 2-1. Boston University (No. 10), New Hampshire (No. 11) and Stony Brook (No. 13) are ranked by Soccer Buzz Magazine in the Northeast Region Top 15.
America East men's soccer begins conference play on Saturday (October 6). This weekend's non-conference action saw Binghamton play its first contest at the new $4.2 million Bearcat Sports Complex on campus. The Bearcats improved to 7-2-0 with a 3-0 win over Cornell in front of a school-record crowd of 1,862. Binghamton came into the week ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA Men's Soccer Northeast Region while Cornell was ranked No. 10.
Boston University, ranked No. 14 in the most recent NFHCA/STX poll, got the weekend started with a 4-1 win over New Hampshire in field hockey action at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge on Friday. The Terriers received a pair of goals from Pam Spuehler. No. 15 Duke ended the Terriers six-game winning streak with a 3-2 win in overtime at Newton, Mass. Boston University is 9-3, including a 3-0 win at No. 15 Virginia last Sunday. Nicole Savage scored her team-leading eighth goal to lead No. 17 Albany to a 3-0 win at Maine on Friday. Savage added two goals in a 3-1 win over UMass Sunday as the Great Danes improved to 9-3.
Conference games in volleyball also commenced this weekend. Defending America East Champion Albany is 2-0 in conference play with wins over Hartford, 3-0 on Friday, and Stony Brook on Saturday. The Great Danes snapped Stony Brook's eight-match winning streak, 3-2, including a 15-11 victory in game five. Albany extended its own winning streak to 10 matches. Binghamton and UMBC are both 2-0 in America East. The Bearcats took game five, 15-13, to defeat New Hampshire, 3-2 on Friday, and then downed Maine, 3-1 on Sunday. The Retrievers defeated Maine, 3-1 on Friday and earned a 3-1 win over New Hampshire Sunday
