No. 3 Stony Brook and No. 1 UMBC have advanced to the finals of the 2007 America East Men's Tennis Championship, while No. 3 UMBC and No. 1 Boston University won its respectively semifinal matches on the women's side to advance to the 2007 America East Women's Tennis Championship.
On the men's side, the defending champion Seawolves upset No. 2 Boston University, 4-0, to advance to the finals for the fifth-straight year, every year as a member of America East. The top-seeded Retrievers moved on to the finals by virtue of a 4-2 over No. 4 Binghamton. UMBC advanced to its first America East Championship title match. In a third-place match No. 4 Binghamton captured a decisive 4-1 win over No. 2 Boston U.
On the women's side, top-seeded and 12-time defending champion Boston University captured a convincing 4-0 win over No. 4 Stony Brook. The Terriers will face third-seeded UMBC, which upset No. 2 Binghamton, 4-2, in the semifinals. The Retrievers are in search of their first-ever America East title, they advanced to the finals in 2004 falling to Boston U., 4-1. In a third-place match, No. 5 Albany captured a 4-0 win over fifth-seeded Hartford.
The men's championship will take place at 9 a.m. at Yale Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. The women's final will begin following the men at approximately 12 noon.
The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
