UMBC’s Fernando Ferreira (Rio de Janiero, Brazil/Anglo Americano) has been named the America East Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week. On the women’s side, University at Albany’s Kim Weltman (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Binghamton University’s Zeynep Altinay (Ankara, Turkey/Ozel Abdulkadir) share the honor. The accolades were announced Tuesday (March 27).
Ferreira compiled a perfect 3-0 record at No. 6 singles this week and has won all eight spring singles matches. He was the lone Retriever to record a win over 53rd-ranked Drake, as he defeated Halvar Dil, 10-6 in a third-set tie-breaker. Ferreira won two of three matches at No. 3 doubles with partner Chris Meyer, with the lone setback to a nationally-ranked Drake tandem. He and Mayer are 9-2 in doubles this spring. Ferreira has a combined 25-9 record for the 2006-07 campaign.
Weltman went 2-0 in singles this week, posting a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Erin Godly from Marist. She then defeated Hartford's Schnobel, 6-1, 6-0 also at No. 2. She also teamed with Aimee Kern at No. 1 doubles to earn 8-0 pro-set victory against Hartford. Weltman has won nine out of her last ten singles matches.
Altinay recorded her school-record 80th and 81st career wins this weekend as Binghamton went 2-0 for the week. Against Hartford, Altinay defeated Stephanie Schnobel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. She played an even bigger role in the Bearcats' 4-3, come-from-behind win at Quinnipiac on Sunday, rallying to beat Mary Wilson 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Altinay also won at No. 3 doubles with Erica Rosenblum both days. At 8-1 (1-0 AE), Binghamton remains off to its best start since moving up to the NCAA Division 1 level six years ago.
