Albany Week Four: Jon Iati - AmericaEast.com

Q:: Three things I can't live without...
A:: Family. Basketball. Pizza.

Q:: Why I chose University at Albany...
A:: I chose UAlbany because when I came here on my recruiting visit, I really liked Coach Will Brown and his staff.  They made me feel welcome and I knew that I wanted to play for them throughout my college basketball experience.  I also liked the variety of academic programs that UAlbany had to offer.   Overall, UAlbany seemed like a good fit both academically and athletically.

Q:: Favorite class and why...
A::  My favorite two classes are Danish and Cinema.  First, I like Danish because it is fun and I enjoy learning a new and uncommon language.  It is also interesting to learn about a new culture.  Cinema is also a favorite class of mine because we get to watch movies during class.

Q:: One thing I have learned at Albany that I will carry with me for the rest of my life is...
A:: One thing I have learned at UAlbany that I will carry with me for the rest of my life is the importance of paying attention to detail.  Paying attention to detail has helped me both in the classroom and on the basketball court by providing me insight to specific things I otherwise may have missed.  This simple task better prepares me for the challenges I may face in both basketball and my schoolwork.

Q:: Other than playing in the NBA, my dream job is...
A::  My dream job, other than the NBA, is to be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.  People in these positions are people of power with great skill, intelligence, and wealth.  I hope to be in a similar situation one day where I get to impose my skill and knowledge on a successful industry.

Q:: Other than my parents, the person who has had the most influence on me is and why...
A:: The people, other than my parents, who have had the most influence on me, are my high school coaches because they pushed me to be the best athlete I could be.  They took the time to work with me everyday to strengthen my skills as a basketball player.  My coaches instilled in me the value of dedication and hard work, both of which have helped me get to where I am today.

Q:: The best thing about being a UAlbany Great Dane is...
A:: The best thing about being a UAlbany Great Dane, apart from being a member of a championship basketball team is all of the gear that we get.  I am proud to be wearing UAlbany basketball gear around campus and when we travel.

Q:: Most memorable moment as an athlete...
A:: My most memorable moment as an athlete has to be when we won the America East basketball tournament last year.  It was such a great feeling beating Vermont on our home court in front of a sold out crowd knowing that we were going to the NCAA Tournament.  The university and the community gave us a great deal of support throughout the entire season and it was great to cap it off with such an awesome win at home.

Q:: What I did this week as a student...
A:: This week as a student I went to all of my classes and study hall.  I also prepared for the upcoming week by talking with my professors and getting all of the work that I will be missing due to being on the road.  Now that the semester is underway, I will be preparing for upcoming exams and projects that I have in my classes.

Q:: What I did this week as an athlete...
A:: This week as an athlete I practiced hard and played in the Big Purple Growl.  The Big Purple Growl is a winter homecoming for UAlbany and we played and beat Binghamton in front of a sold out crowd on Saturday.   This week we have two away games, first at Hartford and then at the University of Maine.

Q:: Based upon my experiences growing up, my advice for young kids about school and athletics is...
A:: Based upon my experiences growing up, my advice for young kids about school and athletics is to find a healthy balance of the two.  It is important to be successful in your academics because basketball will only last for so long.  When basketball eventually ends, it is important to have an education to fall back on.  That is why finding a balance of that when you are in school is so important.  Although it may be more fun to play basketball than go to class, it is important that school comes first.  At the college level, athletes must get certain grades in order to even play basketball.

Q:: Why I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena in Boston on March 2-4...
A::I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena in Boston because those three days is what the entire season comes down to.  The America East Men’s Basketball Championship is why we work so hard all season.  It is the goal of every team there to win the tournament and go to the NCAA Tournament.  There is great competition and an overall excitement that surrounds every moment of every game.
