Stony Brook Week Six: Mitchell Beauford - AmericaEast.com

Q:: Three things I can't live without...
A:: Mother. Basketball. Money.

Q:: Why I chose Stony Brook University...
A:: I chose Stony Brook University because it was a school that was close to home that also had a great academic reputation. I was recruited by other schools that were further from home but I wanted to play at a school where my family could come watch my games. After three and a half years here, I feel I made a good choice ? Stony Brook is challenging academically but the support systems here make sure we spend more time on academics than on basketball. That will help me once I graduate next year.

Q:: Favorite class and why...
A::  I loved my Women’s Studies class. The Professor didn’t force us to side one way or another, but instead she made us think about issues and then we could form our own opinion based on the facts she gave us in class. We studied women from a long time ago to the present and what hurdles they’ve had to overcome. She also taught us using different projects that made us realize Women’s Studies isn’t male bashing or just for women. Every one can benefit from taking her class.

Q:: One thing I have learned at Stony Brook that I will carry with me for the rest of my life is...
A:: The one thing I have learned here that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life is the importance of adversity.  Life is hard and things get tough, but that’s when a person’s real character shows through.  Everyone can act a certain way every day, but you can truly know a person if you look at how they act when life throws them a curveball.

Q:: Other than playing in the NBA, my dream job is...
A::  Pediatrician

Q:: Other than my parents, the person who has had the most influence on me is and why...
A:: The person who has had the most influence on me is one of my fraternity brothers. He is a great mentor and male role model for me. He has a great job and supports his family. That is what I want to be able to do after college. I want my family to know that I will support them and not to worry about anything.

Q:: The best thing about being a Stony Brook Seawolf is...
A:: The best thing about being a Stony Brook Seawolf is that we have support from the fans, both on campus and in the community.  It’s a great feeling to play in a gym where the people from the community come and cheer you on. It’s also nice when professors come to the games and mention it in class.

Q:: Most memorable moment as an athlete...
A:: My most memorable moment as an athlete was when we played Dartmouth my freshman year. I hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer to win the game.

Q:: What I did this week as a student...
A:: The snow storm last week changed our travel plans and also cancelled classes so the plan we had in place for the week for missed classes and study hall had be altered. We had the day off on Monday so I used practice time to study for my AIDS, Race, and Gender quiz. My teacher ended up postponing the quiz so now I’m ready for it when she gives it to us. I used study hall time on Tuesday to get my Politics in Africa reading done because I was going to miss class on Wednesday. Then the snow storm made everyone miss class so I’m actually ahead in the reading now. I used study hall on Friday and Monday to brief my cases for my Gender Issues in the Law class. With the snow and teachers moving things back, now I have three tests the week after the tournament so I’ll need to make sure I get a lot done in the next two weeks.

Q:: What I did this week as an athlete...
A:: Tuesday and Wednesday we had practice, lifting, and film. We were supposed to leave for BU on Wednesday but we didn’t end up leaving until the day of the game because of the snow. We played BU on Thursday and then Friday and Saturday we prepared for UNH. Finally our team played together and we had a lot of people hit key shots and we beat UNH on Sunday.

Q:: Based upon my experiences growing up, my advice for young kids about school and athletics is...
A:: My advice for young kids growing up about school and athletics is that school is the key if you want to succeed as an athlete. I knew I had to get it done in the classroom in order to play in college. There was a time in college when I didn’t listen to my academic advisor or use study hall and I had to learn the hard way that school is more important than basketball.

Q:: Why I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena in Boston on March 2-4...
A:: I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena because it’s our chance to make it to March Madness.
