Vermont Week Five: Marques Blakely - AmericaEast.com

Q:: Three things I can't live without...
A:: My Family. My Friends. My Basketball.

Q:: Why I chose University of Vermont...
A:: There were two main reasons why I chose UVM.  Firstly, the academic reputation of UVM is hard to beat.  I knew that if I came to UVM and worked hard at my school work I would graduate with an excellent education.  Secondly, I came to UVM because of the guys on the team.  They all seemed to be down to earth people and they were really fun to be around.  That was really important to me.

Q:: Favorite class and why...
A::  I really like my Life Skills for Student Athletes class because I get to talk to a lot of other student athletes about the problems and stresses that being a Division I athlete brings.  It is very interesting to me to hear what my friends have to say about their experiences and to hear what other athletes from different teams say about their pressures.  It is a fun class.

Q:: One thing I have learned at Vermont that I will carry with me for the rest of my life is...
A:: The one thing that I have learned that will stay with me is the ability to manage my time.  I found out that I needed to learn this skill quick because it is an essential part of college success.  Even though this semester I have many more basketball games, I am finding that I can get all of my school work done on time because my time management skills are so much better than first semester.

Q:: Other than playing in the NBA, my dream job is...
A::  I would love to become a coach of young kids and be able to teach them that basketball is not everything that life has to offer.  To succeed in life there are many other things that you need to know and be successful at.  Basketball has helped me to get to where I am today, but it isn’t the only thing.

Q:: Other than my parents, the person who has had the most influence on me is and why...
A:: My coaches from all the teams that I have ever played on.  They have all helped me grow as a person as well as a player.  My coaches have taught me that the lessons of basketball can and do apply to other areas of my life.

Q:: The best thing about being a Vermont Catamount is...
A:: I think the best thing is the support that I have been given on and off the court while here at UVM.  This support and encouragement has given me confidence in all that I do here at school because I know that all of UVM is behind me and helping me.

Q:: Most memorable moment as an athlete...
A:: My most memorable moment so far would be my entire senior season of high school.  As a team, we broke a lot of school records and it was a fun season.  In the process we became a very close team and those memories will last a lifetime for me.

Q:: What I did this week as a student...
A:: I had a ton of things to do last week.  On Monday I had two classes and then I hour of study hall. Tuesday I had 2 more classes, and then after my basketball workout was done I had more study hall to go to.  On Wednesday had two classes, one test and one quiz due, more practice and more study hall to attend.  Thursday I had 2 classes and a 5 page paper due (and more study hall) and on Friday I had my last 2 classes of the week and I had to squeeze 2 hrs of study hall in before our basketball game that evening.

Q:: What I did this week as an athlete...
A:: We had two games this week so we watched a lot of films of our opponents, getting ready for those games.  We practiced nearly every day.  Between our 2 games we got a day off from practice to rest as well as get caught on all of my school assignments.  We had strength and conditioning workouts after several of our basketball practices.  It was a busy week.

Q:: Based upon my experiences growing up, my advice for young kids about school and athletics is...
A:: I would advise kids to get good grades in school and make sure that you work hard both on and off the court.  I would also tell kids that college basketball is really hard work.  It is almost like having a second full time job on top of your academic full time job.  But I would say that all the work and sacrifice definitely pays off.  I feel really good about committing myself to do the very best job I can do in basketball and school.

Q:: Why I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena in Boston on March 2-4...
A::I am looking forward to this event because it will be my first college championship.  Our recent game at Albany was like a championship game and the atmosphere there was really amazing so I can only imagine what it is going to be like in Boston.  I am excited to maybe play in a game that is so very important.
