Vermont Week Three: Nick Vier - AmericaEast.com

Q:: Three things I can't live without...
A:: Family. Friends. Basketball.

Q:: Why I chose University of Vermont...
A:: When I saw what a beautiful campus UVM had and what a great town Burlington was, I know this was the place for me.  The people here are great.  UVM has such  a rich basketball tradition as well as an impeccable academic reputation.   This was where I wanted to be.

Q:: Favorite class and why...
A:: My favorite class is history.  I love to learn about different cultures of our country and the world.  It is a fascinating and interesting subject to study.

Q:: One thing I have learned at Vermont that I will carry with me for the rest of my life is...
A:: I have learned that hard work and determination are two of the most important qualities it takes to be successful.  Great results are the result of hard work and determination and I know that made these two things to live by.  I attribute these things to where I am today.

Q:: Other than playing in the NBA, my dream job is...
A::   I really love the ocean and its wildlife.  So...I would say that I would dream about becoming a Marine Biologist.

Q:: Other than my parents, the person who has had the most influence on me is and why...
A:: I would say that every coach I have ever had at every level of my basketball career.  Again, there was a common ingredient that they all emphasized and demanded...and this was to approach everything that I do with discipline and  hard work.

Q:: The best thing about being a Vermont Catamount is...
A:: Our basketball team has a great reputation both on and off the court so I feel that I am well respected by my professors, our students and our fans.

Q:: Most memorable moment as an athlete...
A:: When I was in high school my team won our county championship.  That was real meaningful to me.  It was a goal of ours and even though we encountered some bumps along the way, we never gave up and accomplished what we set out to do.  Here at UVM, so far, I really have appreciated the friends that I have made on the basketball team.  They are a great group of guys.

Q:: What I did this week as a student...
A:: On Monday I had two classes to go to.  I then went to study hall for two hours and did all my home work.  Tuesday I had two more classes and did all my reading for my classes until late at night.  Wednesday I had a huge group project that I worked on with several of my classmates in my business class.  We didn’t get our group project done on Weds. so we worked on it again on Thursday.   Friday, I went to all of my classes and went to study hall again so that I could prepare for some tests that I have coming up the following week.

Q:: What I did this week as an athlete...
A:: Saturday we played Albany here at UVM so we got Sunday off to rest and get caught up on our homework.   Monday we had a hard practice and then we went to our strength and conditioning facility and lifted weights.  Tuesday and Wednesday we practiced and then watched films of the next team we are going to play in order to get ready for them.  Thursday night we played the Univ. of Maine.  Before the game we had a light practice where we went over, one last time, the things we were going to use against Maine.  Then Friday after the Maine game we practiced hard, getting ready for the next team.

Q:: Based upon my experiences growing up, my advice for young kids about school and athletics is...
A:: I would advise young kids to try and balance your life as well as you can.  By that I mean that you must not only play basketball, but you need to spend time with your friends and your family.  Have fun doing other stuff.   Try the best you can to just be a normal kid.  You should take your school very seriously and try to work hard both on and off the court.

Q:: Why I am looking forward to the America East Men’s Basketball Championship at Agganis Arena in Boston on March 2-4...
A::I am looking forward to the America East Championships because it will be my first time to a conference championship at the college level.  There are going to be many good teams there but If we can continue to work hard and improve, I feel strongly about our chances to compete for the championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.
