Boston University Five-Way Invitational
The Albany men’s track and field team captured first-place at the Boston University Five-Way Invitational as six Great Danes grabbed individual first-place finishes. The Great Danes, who finished with 81 points, defeated four other teams including America East rivals Northeastern (70 points) and Boston University (41). Individual champions for Albany included Nelson English (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) in the 200-meter dash (22.19), Aggrey Morris (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College) in the 400 (48.76), Stephen Evans (Cortland Manor, N.Y./Lakeland) in the 500 (1:04.5), Gered Burns (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) in the 800 (3:15.03), Kurt Campbell (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy) in the 55 (6.58) and Ray Gilman (Altamont, N.Y./Berne-Knox-Westerlo) won the triple jump (45’ 5.75”).

Northeastern, which placed second overall, received first-place finishes from Derek Anderson (Wrentham, Mass./Xavarian Brothers) in the shot put (54' 9.5”) and the weight throw (57' 2.5”), Chad Barboza (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) in the high jump (6' 5.5”), Mike Couch (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) in the pole vault (15' 9”) and Peter Jasmin (Middletown, N.Y./Pinebush) who took first in the 55 hurdles (7.71). Matt Adler (Scottsdale, Ariz./Chaparral), Dan Coval (Holland, Pa./Council Rock), and junior Jeff McAulay (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) each grabbed first-place finishes for the fifth-place Terriers.

University of Rhode Island Invitational
Both Hartford and New Hampshire were in action at the University of Rhode Island. In the women’s 12-team invitational, the Wildcats finished fifth behind Kate Litwinowich’s (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) first-place finish in the 800 (2:13.57), while the Hawks finished 10th overall. In the men’s Mega Meet, New Hampshire took fifth-place honors while Hartford finished ninth overall. David Ball (Orange, Vt./Orange) finished second in the high jump (2.01) to lead the Wildcats, while DePaul Avant (Miami, Fla./Miami Carol City) was the top Hartford finisher with a seventh-place showing in the shot put (13.14).

Around the Conference
The Albany women’s track and field squad captured the team title at Colgate University’s Class of ’32 Invitational. The Great Danes, who finished with 247 points, tallied 119 points more than runner up Cortland. Diane Matthews (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) led the way for Albany, placing first in the 1,000 (2:55.25) and running the 1,200-leg on the winning distance medley relay (12:26.77) team. Joy Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) posted two wins at the meet, setting a new meet record in the shot put (44’ 4.75”) and also grabbing first in the weight throw (46’ 11.75”).

The Binghamton track and field teams had a strong showing at the Syracuse Invitational as Heather Tassler (Hartsdale, N.Y./Woodlands) set a school record in the 60 (7.98) to lead the women’s team. On the men's side, Rory Quiller (West Point, N.Y./James I. Oneill) captured the pole vault (15’ 11”), Luke Shafer (Penfield, N.Y./McQuaid) won the high jump (6’ 4”) and Andrew Cloud (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) took top honors in the weight throw (54’ 2”).

The Maine men’s and women’s track and field teams picked up wins over Holy Cross, 106-72 on the women’s side and 109-66 on the men’s. The Black Bear women recorded 12 first-place individual finishes and won both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays, while the men took first place in all but three events. Double winners for Maine included Mike Lansing (Lovell, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) in the mile (4:17.61) and the 1,000 (2:34.69) and Troy Irvine (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) in the 60 (6.66) and 60 hurdles (7.97).

The Northeastern women defended their title at the Greater Boston Championship held at Harvard University. The Huskies scored 176 points, outdistancing Harvard (140), MIT (63), Brandeis (50) and Bentley (11). The Huskies sported eight individual champions, including two first-place finishes by Shanae Henry (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) in the 60 (7.87) and the long jump (17’ 9”). Northeastern also grabbed top honors in the 4x400 relay (4:05.37).

The UMBC men’s and women’s track and field teams, the Vermont women’s team, and the Stony Brook men’s and women’s teams were also in action this week. Leading the Retrievers at the George Mason Collegiate Open Invitational was Jonathon Desi (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall), who turned in a pair of first-place finishes for the Retrievers. Pacing the Catamounts at the Dartmouth Invitational was Kristal Kostiew (Northwood, N.H./Coe-Brown) who posted wins in the shot put (14.48m) and weight throw (18.64m) and Michele Palmer (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth South) who won the mile (5:19.12). For Stony Brook, Jackie Nunez (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Suffolk Community College) won the 800 (2:11.61) at the Met Championships, setting a new school record.
