BOSTON - The UMBC men and women lead after day two of the 2006 America East Swimming & Diving Championship at Boston University's Aquatic Center.
UMBC's Justin Bronson gave the Retrievers a great start by capturing the 500-freestyle title with a 4:28.69. The Retrievers swept the top seven places if the race.
Binghamton's David Holmes captured the 200-IM, along with taking part in the winning 200-freestyle relay. Teammate Kaan Tayla also swam a leg of this winning relay and captured the title in 50-freestyle. Other members of the 200-freestyle relay were Wade Rimbach and Brian Koralewski.
In the women's meet, UMBC's Meagan Sackett paced the Retrievers with a win in the 500-freestyle (5:54.13), while teammate Daniele Surkovich took first in the 50-freestyle (24.02). Robin Klein, Lindsay Engler and Elyse Gibson joined Surkovich to win the 200-freestyle relay (1:37.05).
Saturday’s prelims will begin at 10 a.m. for the 400-individual medley, 100-butterfly, 200-freestyle, 100-breaststroke and 100-backstroke. Finals will start at 5:30 p.m. and will include these events, and the men’s three-meter dive and 400-medley relay.
On Sunday, prelims start at 10 a.m. and include the 1650-freestyle, 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke, 400-freestyle and 200-butterfly. The championships for these events will follow, starting at 5:30 p.m., and include the one-meter dive.
This weekend marks the first time the event is being held at the Boston University Aquatic Center, after last year being held at the UMBC Natorium.
Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Maine, UMBC, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont (women only) will all vie for the 2006 Swimming and Diving Championship.
