Binghamton Advances to Women's Soccer Semifinals on Come-From-Behind Overtime Victory

Defending America East Champion and No. 3 seed Binghamton scored two unanswered goals, including the game-winner by Kim Povill, to down No. 6 UMBC 2-1 in overtime first round action of the 2005 America East Women’s Soccer Championship at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass.

The Retrievers got on the board first as Mary Hearin took a corner kick off the foot of Amy Morrison and sent it past Binghamton goalkeeper Kristie Bowers. UMBC took a 1-0 lead at the 18:59 mark.

The Bearcats then tied things up with perfect execution of a corner kick. At the 57:30 mark, Danielle White headed a Kelly Sanders corner kick to the back of net to even the score at one goal apiece. The Retrievers would not lead again.

Binghamton’s Povill took a pass from Lauren Massey and fired it from 35 yards out. Povill’s shot hit the underside of the crossbar and broke the plane of the goal to give the Bearcats the 2-1 victory.

The Bearcats improve to 10-6-3 on the season and advance to the conference semifinals where they will take on No. 2 seed Maine on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Binghamton defeated the Black Bears 1-0 in the regular season meeting between the two back on October 16. UMBC’s season comes to an end with a 9-9-1 final mark.

No 5 New Hampshire advanced to the semifinals earlier in the day with a 1-0 double overtime victory over No. 4 Vermont. The Wildcats will take on host and No. 1 seed Boston University in the first semifinal on Sunday at 12 noon.

The winner of the America East Championship earns the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s soccer selection announcement is scheduled to be held on Monday, November 7 live on ESPNews (time TBA).
