Binghamton Advances to Men's Soccer Semifinal
Vestal, N.Y. ? Defending America East Champion Binghamton University won its first round matchup against No. 6 seeded University of New Hampshire with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks after the Bearcats and Wildcats played to a 0-0 draw at West Gym field.
Despite getting outshot 13-4 in regulation, New Hampshire was able to keep the game scoreless through 90 minutes and two 10-minute, sudden-victory overtimes. Stefan Gonet of Binghamton made 6 saves, while New Hampshire’s Brian Levey made seven to keep the game scoreless and force penalty kicks.
Much like the game, the goalkeepers were again the factor in the penalty kick session. After the Bearcat’s Graham Munro scored to give Binghamton the 1-0 edge, four consecutive players were denied the net. Gonet stopped UNH’s Tyler Jackson, and the Wildcat’s Charles Darkwah hit the post, while Levey Stoned both Stephen Bruce and Ryan Pierce of Binghamton. Junior Eric Massi of New Hampshire would even the score at 1-1, followed by consecutive successful tries by Binghamton’s Michael Austin and New Hampshire’s Geoff Sanford to tie the shootout at 2-2 and force sudden death.
Binghamton goalie Gonet then stepped up on offense for a change, beating UNH’s keeper to give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead. He then sealed the win when he made a diving save on New Hampshire’s Logan Lee.
Binghamton, which advances to the America East semifinals to face second-seeded Albany on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Albany, improves to 10-2-7 on the season. New Hampshire’s season comes to an end with a final mark of 5-6-7.
The America East champion earns the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championships.
