Megaloudis Leads Stony Brook to Semifinal Overtime Victory

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Chris Megaloudis netted the game-winning goal to lead No. 1 Stony Brook to a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over No. 5 Albany in semifinal action of the 2005 America East Men's Soccer Championship at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Seawolves advance to their first-ever America East title game and will host No. 3 Binghamton on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Tamer Mohamed set up Megaloudis for the game-winning goal just over six and half minutes into overtime. The goal was the sixth of the season for Megaloudis and the biggest goal of his Seawolves’ career. Stony Brook now has a chance to win its first America East championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. If the Seawolves can pull off the victory over Binghamton, they will be the eighth different team to win the America East Championship.

Adam Ciklic scored the game’s first goal for the Seawolves as Michael Palacio and Douglas Narvaez assisted on the score at the 62:36 mark. Albany’s Yan Gbolo evened the contest just under 15 minutes later as he sent his shot to the back of the net on assists by Stephan Hall and Gaby Seguin-Gauthier at 76:23.

The game featured plenty of offensive throughout as the two teams combined to fire 41 shots (Stony Brook 24, Albany 17) and sixteen corner kicks (Stony Brook 9, Albany 7). Both starting goalkeepers, Albany’s Steward Ceus and Stony Brook’s John Moschella, each recorded seven saves in net.

The winner of the America East Championship earns the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The men’s soccer selection announcement is scheduled to be held on Monday, November 14 live on ESPNews (4-4:30 p.m.).
