Boston University Advances to Championship Game
DURHAM, N.H. ? Behind Lindsay Lewis’ six goals, which tied the conference’s single game tournament record, Boston University defeated University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 12-10, in the semifinals of the America East Women’s Lacrosse Championship at Memorial Field. The Terriers advance to the league’s title game to face host New Hampshire on Sunday (12 noon).
Boston University came out strong to start the game as it took an early 5-1 lead and appeared to be the more dominant team. Lewis’ first goal at the 11:51 mark was the fifth for Boston U., which caused UMBC head coach Monica Yeakel to take a timeout to rally her team.
The Retrievers responded by scoring consecutive goals, getting the America East newcomers right back in the contest. Lewis answered for the Terriers with two goals in just over a minute to up their lead to 7-3 at 15:56.
UMBC closed the first half with two goals, the last which was netted by Anna Jacobs came with just one tick remaining before intermission. Boston University took a 7-5 lead to the break.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle as teams traded goals through the first 13 minutes as the score stood at 10-8 at the 13:07 mark. The Terriers then netted consecutive goals, the second of which was Lewis’ record-tying tally at 19:48 that also provided insurance for Boston U.
Trailing by four with just over five minutes remaining in the game, UMBC rallied to scored two more, giving the game it finals 12-10 margin, but eventually ran out of steam in the end.
Lewis’ six goal performance tied the conference’s previous championship record, which was tied earlier in the day by UNH’s Katie Leland and was originally set by Delaware’s Sarah Edwards in 1998.
Boston U. and New Hampshire square off in the America East Women’s Lacrosse Championship game on Saturday. The two have met in the previous two league title contests with the Terriers coming out on top in both games.
