Northeastern Captures Field Hockey Championship

Cambridge, Mass. ? The Northeastern field hockey team captured its fourth-straight America East Championship on Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over cross-town rival Boston University in the title game at Jack Barry Field. NU earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship as the Huskies win their 10th league title in the 15-year history of the event.

The Huskies' offense pressured Boston U.'s defense throughout the game. Liane Dixon just missed putting the Huskies up when her shot in front of Terrier sophomore goalkeeper Erin Prediger hit the left post and deflected away at the 16 minute mark of the first half.

The Huskies got on the scoreboard with 11:47 remaining in the first half. Ashley Webber took a shot from the right of Prediger, a shot that Prediger saved. The rebound, however, deflected back to Webber and she promptly passed it to Mari Creatini, who was alone on the right post. Creatini knocked it into the back of the cage to give the Huskies all the offense they would need.

NU was credited with 14 shots in the opening half, while Boston U. had six. The Huskies continued to pressure the Terrier defenders in the second half, taking 16 shots while their defense held the Terriers to just one in the second frame of action.

Northeastern doubled its advantage with 9:42 to go when Dixon scored an unassisted goal to make the score 2-0.

Creatini was named the Championship's Most Outstanding Player after being credited with nine shots and the game-winning goal. She was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Dixon, Lauren Edelmeier and Diana Nelson. Boston University's Prediger, Kara Rossi, and Lauren Vendetti, Maine's Rachael Hilgar and Katie Flaherty and New Hampshire's Caitlin Gillen and Brittany Schneider were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
