Boston University Clinches America East Field Hockey Crown

Sophomore Sarah Shute paced Boston University to its fifth America East Field Hockey Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 victory over Maine at Jack Barry Field. The Terriers will now face the Mid-American Conference Champion in a play-in game on Tuesday to gain a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

After a scoreless first-half of play, offensive action picked up in the second frame as all four of the game’s goals were scored in the final 11 minutes of play. Ashley Parker broke a 0-0 tie at the 59:23 mark as she scored an unassisted goal to give Boston U. a 1-0 lead. Shute then netted her first goal of the game, the eventual game winner, just over two minutes later to give Boston U. a 2-0 edge at 62:14.

The Black Bears fought their way back to a one-goal deficit as Nicole Emery sent a Joanna Fernandes pass to the back of the cage at 65:08. Maine’s hopes of a come-back were squandered just 14 seconds later as Shute scored her second goal of the game at 65:22 to give the contest its final 3-1 score.

Boston University senior back Colleen McClay was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Performer and was joined on the All-Championship Team by teammates Caitlyn Cassara, Sarah Hudak and Pam Spuehler. Other honorees included Maine’s Meagan Connolly, Rebecca Giroux and Gina Legge, Albany’s Tina Bryson and Arlette Westdorp and Vermont’s Danielle Collins and Ariel Eber.

The field hockey selection show will be aired live on CSTV Tuesday night, 7:30 p.m.
