BURLINGTON, VT. - Miguel Magrass' drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead No. 3 University of Vermont to a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over No. 2 Maine in the first game of the championship match-up between the two at Centennial Field on the UVM campus. With the victory, the Catamounts force the Black Bears to play the "if necessary" game to decide the league champion in the four-team, double-elimination tournament.
The winner is the America East Champion and will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship. The Black Bears are looking to win their third league crown, while the Catamounts are searching for their first-ever conference title.
The victory for Vermont marks its fifth straight in its last at bat as the Catamounts battled back from trailing 5-0 in the fourth. After not playing extra innings once during the regular season, the Catamounts have now won back-to-back 10 inning games by identical 6-5 scores.
Joe Serafin picked up the win in relief as the UVM bullpen effort (6.2 innings, four hits, no runs) led by Bryan Rembisz who shut the door on Maine going 4.2 innings while striking out five.
Magrass went 4-for-6 on the day while Raymond Montanez, whose one-out walk started the game-winning rally, went 2-for-3 with a solo homer and three runs scored.
Maine’s five runs brought their total runs to 31 in the championship to set the record for most runs by any league team in the eight-year history of the current tournament format (four-team, double elimination). Northeastern previously held the record with 28 runs over four games in the 1998 championship.
