Rossi's Single Leads Vermont Baseball to America East Title Game

BURLINGTON, VT. ? Frank Rossi’s single in the bottom of the 10th lifted the University of Vermont to a 6-5 victory over Northeastern in the 2005 America East Baseball Championship at Centennial Field on the UVM campus. The Catamounts advance to the league title game on Saturday (12 noon) and will take on the University of Maine.

Northeastern scored two runs in the fifth and the sixth to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Senior Devin Monds was in control through six innings, until the Catamounts finally got on the board in the seventh. Jim Chapman scored on an error by Northeastern third baseman Tim Bush to get the Cats on the board, 4-1. Miguel Magrass’ later singled down the left field line, scoring two runs to cut the NU lead to one, 4-3. Bush made another error later in the inning as Jason Carey scored for UVM to tie game at 4-4.

Vermont would take the lead,5-4, in the bottom of the eighth as Raymond Montanez knocked in Champman on a single to center. Northeastern didn’t waste any time responding in the top of the 9th as Chris Emanuele led off the inning and took the first pitch he saw deep. His solo shot to left field tied the game at 5-5.

The Huskies managed one hit in the top of the 10th, leaving the game tied at 5-5, and setting the table for the Catamount heroics in the bottom half of the inning. Andrew Folley started the rally for Vermont with a one-out single to left field. Nick Gallipani, who would eventually score the game-winning run, came in to pinch run for Folley. Gallipani advanced to second on a wild pitch by NU’s Kris Dabrowiecki. Matt Naimoli walked and Montanez struck out to set the scene for Rossi. The sophomore outfielder singled up the middle to drive in Gallipani and win the game for UVM.

The game marked the first extra-innings affair of the season for the Catamounts and the first extra innings contest in the America East Championship since 2000.

Tickets for tomorrow’s America East title game go on sale at Centennial Field at 11 a.m.

The winner of the four-team double-elimination tournament will garner America East’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
