BURLINGTON, VT. ? Derek Miller threw a complete-game shutout to lead three-seeded University of Vermont to a 2-0 victory over fourth-seeded Binghamton University at the 2005 America East Baseball Championship on Friday afternoon at Centennial Field on the Vermont campus. The Bearcats are eliminated from the four-team, double-elimination tournament, while Vermont advances to take on the loser of the Northeastern University-University of Maine game (3:30 p.m.) later tonight (7 p.m.).
The third contest of the league championship was a pitcher’s duel between the senior veteran Miller and the America East Rookie of the Year Scott Diamond. Miller and Diamond were nearly unhittable through eight innings as neither had given up a run. Miller worked efficiently the entire game as he allowed just two hits, while walking one and striking out six. He faced just 29 batters the entire game. Diamond went 8 and two-third innings giving up one earned run, on eight hits, four strikeouts and just one walk.
With the contest in a scoreless tie, the host Catamounts came to the plate in the top of the ninth and got all the run support that they would need for Miller. Jason Carey knocked a two-out double to deep left field to get things started for the Catamounts. Miguel Magrass was then intentionally walked by Diamond, his only walk of the day, to put runners on first and second for Kyle Brault. The junior outfielder responded with a single through the left side that drove in Carey and gave UVM a 1-0 lead. Jay Iannoni then reached on an infield single that was fielded by Diamond, who then threw the ball away in an attempt to get Iannoni at first. Magrass scored on the error, giving the game its final 2-0 margin. Adam Shatkun then came on to relieve Diamond and Shatkun got Jim Chapman to ground out to end the inning.
The game lasted just two hours and seven minutes as Miller threw his fifth nine-inning complete game of the season on just 97 pitches. The break for the Catamount bullpen was much needed after using five pitchers in last night’s 14-2 loss to Maine. Vermont now has to wait to see who it will face at 7 p.m.
The winner of the four-team double-elimination tournament will garner America East’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.
