Stony Brook Upsets Northeastern in Game 1 of Baseball Championship
ORONO, Maine- Stony Brook erupted for 20 hits, including five home runs, as the fourth-seeded Seawolves defeated top-seeded Northeastern, 15-6, in the first game of the America East Baseball Championship at Mahaney Diamond. Stony Brook awaits the winner of tonight’s game between Maine and Albany. The defending conference champion Huskies move to the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Stony Brook, 27-25, wasted little time in getting to Jordan Thomson, who had a 0.50 earned run average in conference games and had been named the America East Pitcher of the Year a day earlier. Andrew Larsen launched the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a 1-0 lead. Matt Devins followed with a double down the left field line and Isidro Fortuna drove in Devins with a single to left. Nick Theoharis then homered to left center for a 4-0 lead.
After Northeastern scored a run in the bottom of the first on the first of two home runs from Jeff Heriot, Stony Brook went back to work with three runs in the second inning. Stephen Didsbury led off the inning with a home run to right field. Larsen and Devins had back-to-back singles and each advanced a base on a long flyout. A wild pitch allowed Larsen to score and Devins to move to third and Theoharis followed with a sacrifice fly.
The Seawolves increased the lead to 10-1 in the third inning. Dave Mischo led of the inning with a double which chased Thomson, who allowed nine hits and eight runs in two innings while falling to 8-4. Jim Madison relieved Thomson and fared no better, allowing back-to-back singles by Cole Cicatelli and Chris Sipp, with Sipp’s single scoring Mischo. Didsbury delivered a sacrifice fly and Devins added an RBI double.
Heriot added his second home run in the fifth inning and Miguel Paquette followed with a home run to cut the lead to 10-4. But the Seawolves answered with four runs in the sixth inning on two run homers by Theoharis and Mischo.
Kevin Fitzgerald went six innings allowing seven hits and four runs. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked one in improving to 7-2.
Mischo had four hits for the Seawolves while Larsen and Devins added three hits apiece. Each of the Stony Brook starters had at least one hit.
Heriot and Paquette each had three hits for the Huskies, 28-19.
