Maine Advances to Conference Title Game
Jason Harvey singled in the go-ahead run as Maine scored four runs in the seventh inning and added five runs in the eighth to rally for an 11-5 win over Albany in the America East Baseball Championship at Mahaney Diamond. With the win, Maine advances to the championship round of the double-elimination tournament where the Black Bears, 34-20, will meet Stony Brook Saturday. Maine, which lost 6-3 to the Seawolves earlier Friday, would have to defeat Stony Brook twice to win the conference championship.

Mark Reichley led off the seventh inning with a single and Greg Creek followed with a double. Joe Hough was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Pete Saunders then delivered a two-run single to cut the Albany lead to 5-4. Mark Suchowiecki relived Scott McGovern and got Matt McGraw to ground to third with both runners advancing. Suchowiecki then got Mike Ferriggi to ground back to the mound and Hough was erased at the plate for the second out. Saunders then scored on a passed ball and Harvey followed with an RBI single to left field for a 6-5 lead.

Maine added five runs in the eighth inning. Hough delivered a two-run triple, McGraw had an RBI double and Ferriggi hit a two-run homer.

The Black Bears had taken a 2-0 lead thanks in large part to the wildness of Albany starter Ethan Vaiana, who allowed two runs on three hits with five walks in 3.2 innings. Hough doubled before Vaiana issued back-to-back walks to McGraw and Harvey to load the bases. Vaiana then hit Simon Williams and walked Aaron Izaryk to force in two runs.

Albany, 37-14, answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brad Daniels, Joe Lamb and Steve Wyland had consecutive singles to score Daniels. After a strikeout, Jason Martin singled to score Lamb and drive Maine starter Steve Richard from the game. Richard allowed two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 3.2 innings.

Albany took a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning when Ryan Harris hit Daniels and Wyland. Dan Schoonmaker then tripled to right center to score two. Martin followed with a double to score Schoonmaker and Derek DeGrazio was intentionally walked before Scott Robinson relieved Harris and ended the rally.

Robinson pitched 3.2 shutout innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts while improving to 4-0. McGovern, who allowed four runs on four hits in 2.1 innings took the loss to fall to 1-1.
