The Boston University women and the Hartford men lead after day one of the 2006 America East Golf Championships at The Oaks course of The International in Bolton, Mass. The two-day event concludes on Tuesday (May 2).

On the men’s side, Boston University’s Michael O’Day, of nearby Westboro, Mass., recorded the first hole-in-one in conference tournament history as he aced the 203-yard 17th hole. O’Day finished the afternoon atop the individual leaderboard with a two-over 74, tied with David Arnold of Hartford. Arnold was one of three Hawks to post scores in the top-five as teammates Dustin Wetherup (77) and A.J. Oleksak (78) were also solid contributors.

Binghamton’s Matt Mattingly posted a solid 78 to lead the Bearcats, while all five Binghamton golfers posted scores in the top 10. Hartford’s first-round tally of 308 paces the three men’s squads. Binghamton (317) and Boston University (348) sit in second and third, respectively, after the opening round of play.

Boston University posted five of the top-seven scores in the opening round of the 2006 America East Women’s Golf Championship to jump out to a healthy 19-stroke lead over the rest of the field. The Terriers combined to shoot a 363 on the day, 19 strokes ahead of second-place Hartford (382) and 20 strokes in front of third-place Albany (383).

Dierdre Hatfield of Boston U. fired an 87 to post the day’s best round on the female side, while teammates Allison Hamilton (91), Lauren Strong (92), Hannah Barry (93) and Haley Goucher (93) were all instrumental in enabling the Terriers to separate from the rest of the field. Albany’s Amanda McPhee and Hartford’s Kerry Hassell tied for the second-best individual round on the day with 89.

The two-day conference title meet concludes on Tuesday with the women teeing off at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men at 10:20. The stroke-play championship is a 36-hole event, with rounds of 18 holes each day. It is the first time The International has hosted the conference’s title meet.
